I think this has a) been discussed before and b) tended to Apple vs the World flamewars, so off list replies are probably best... I'm thinking of getting an MP3 player. If I just go for the cheapest option at my selected capacity (5GB, I think) what are the likely pitfalls, missing features and hidden costs? Does anyone have particular recommendations? Thanks! If i was you, i would get: a Rio Karma!!! if you can find one..... some reasons why its 20GB!!!!!! supports pretty much every audio codec you could ever want (even FLAC) will work with ANY operating system due to the device being plugged in at a network port and you can load up a java based client to send tracks over to it. I have infact used it with Linux, XP64 and MacOSX. all without reformatting or making any changes to the device!!! theyre pretty reliable! never had more than a couple of crashing probs with mine. Its smaller than an ipod!!! (ipods suck - unless you flash them with linux :-D) has funky ass VU meters on teh front!!!! monitor that audio pressure baby!!! No one wants them any more, you can get them dirt cheap it even has a mode that maps out the level of the track and displays this on the front so you can skip to areas where the track gets more intense and less intense.... really really good feature! Oh and if you are like me... or just really sad, you can rip the thing apart and install a 40gb version of the same drive thats in it!! woo!!!! bad points: they look ugly ummmmm... good luck on your hunt!! ive seen these in shops for less than 130 quid!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Nibbles (forgot to cc this (dumbass)) (current fav listenings - Chris Clark - Ceramics is the bomb, The Flashbulb - Kirlian Selections, Amon Tobin - Permutation) you will get severly fed up with only 5gb to play with. i promise!!!!! i reccomend the Iriver, i got mine about six months ago and its performed like a champ. you can use it with any system as it just plugs in and acts a removable hard drive, it can play pretty much every audio format, with a firmware upgrade you can watch movies on it. you can read books on it, it has a built in radio if you ever need that thing, and my favorite feature is that it has an input that allows you to record directly to MP3. i take it to shows with me all the time jack it in and go home with 320kb mp3's of the performances. there is also the internal mic that is good for taking to places and using to record stuff for later sampling, sort of thing. oh yeah, it also has a photo viewer. downsides are that the interface is -slightly- clunky, but once you get used to it its fine. and i don't so much like its random play feature works. josh23 On Tue, 23 Aug 2005 16:13:08 +0100, Ant Mann wrote

yeah, you could easily plug a mic into the the line in on it. of course it's only an 1/8th inch plug, so you'd need an adapter or some such thing, but it's definitely mic friendly. you should go check out the iriver website: http://www.iriver.com/ they'll give you the lowdown on it all. i'm not sure about the riokarma's, but, i -think- there is an extra peripheral you can buy for ipods to record. but nothing built in. I like the Neuros - http://www.neurosaudio.com 20 GB, in it's smallest configuration. hybrid flash/harddrive player for flexibility built in mic line in records mp3 or wav, up to 48khz (DAT quality) built in FM reciever built in FM transmitter (use it in the car, at home, wherever there's speakers and an FM tuner!) open source firmware. hardware schematics available for the taking. hardware upgradeable to larger drives, etc. open source conduit software for syncing. really affordable, considering some of the competition. Caveat - when I first got mine, it was broken, and I had to send it back. And, right now, about a year later, it's broken again - the battery/power subsystem is messed up, and I had to send it in for repair. On the plus side, their support personnel are awesomely helpful. And when it works (99% of the time I've had it) it's teh roxx0rz. Also, their soon-to-be-released 442 device will have: PVR functionality. mpeg, WMV, Divx, mp3, oog, etc. etc. analog video and audio inputs and outputs for easy connection to home video equipment 3.6 inch screen for watching video on the go. open source everything. dual core CPU!! Looks awesome, but expensive. -Ian -----Original Message----- From: josh23 [mailto:josh23@acre-c.com] Sent: Tuesday, August 23, 2005 12:35 PM To: idm@hyperreal.org Subject: Re: [idm] MP3 Players (again) yeah, you could easily plug a mic into the the line in on it. of course it's only an 1/8th inch plug, so you'd need an adapter or some such thing, but it's definitely mic friendly. you should go check out the iriver website: http://www.iriver.com/ they'll give you the lowdown on it all. i'm not sure about the riokarma's, but, i -think- there is an extra peripheral you can buy for ipods to record. but nothing built in. interesting topic, thanks for all the info. i'm actually considering the 20GB Archos Gmini 402, mostly because it also plays video and photos (and even games!). but - i'm a bit worried about the screen size (2.2") , has anyone played with this device already? is the screen good enough to watch full movies? thanks! ___________________________________________________________ Yahoo! http://knittingfactory.com/calendar/event_descrip.cfm?event_num=55856&room=1&location=1 i know this has been brought up before a couple million times, but i'm pissed. i was all stoked that the glitch show at knitting factory had five acts and i was interested in seeing two of the first three (hearts of darknesses and datach'i) and figured out of five acts i could get out early. turns out the show runs until 4am... maybe i'm old, and maybe i come from a "rock n' roll man!" background, but this seems like a tradition of techno/rave, and shouldn't be assumed for newer electronic music (this is not dance music, so why are there club hours?!?!?). i in no way am flaming the promoters of this event, i'm very glad they put it together, just as a general statement... i go to a lot of electronic shows alone as not to risk convincing a friend to go and them not liking it. and personally, i love going to big line-up shows that start at 8:00 pm. you get to watch the first couple acts with a cup of coffee, move to beer, good times. grumble-grumble _________________________________________________________________ FREE pop-up blocking with the new MSN Toolbar ? get it now! http://toolbar.msn.click-url.com/go/onm00200415ave/direct/01/ --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

You should come to South Africa... NOTHING starts before 11pm. Doors will open at 9, but if you do happen to come along at 9, there will be nobody at the door to let you in, the venue will still be in the setting up stages, all lights up and people will look at you strange. Headliners won't come on before round about 1am (and that's also when any self-respecting posers arrive). Come 3 in the morning, and the joint will be jumping. Same here in Germany. You go to a party before 1am and you'll be tired before something really gets started. And at least at the weekends its nothing special if people still are dancing at 6 in the morning. I always was wondering why these things happen. When I started going to clubs (like 10 years before) parties usually started like 9 or 10 pm, but maybe this was because I went to the greenhorn-places. And still I am wondering what people do before starting the night. Are they home watching videos, playing with themselves (or optionally boy- or girlfiriend)? Dunno Sok Irene McC schrieb:

hell, i'm actually a seventh grade english teacher, reporting to work at 7:30am with a 45minute+ commute... during the school year i don't go out to much of anything (unless you call falling asleep on the couch with a half eaten burrito and a blockbuster receipt on my lap doing something)...

What can you do. It's the whole nature/culture of the beast. I live just outside of Detroit - which is full of good shows - and because my day job has me up at 4:30 am (1), I have an unforgiving employer (Generous Motors) (2), I am hourly and I can't afford to blow days off if I could get them (3) and even if I could, I have a nasty sleep disorder which would make me a zombie for days even if all of the other conditions were in play to go. As a result, I miss almost all of the great stuff going on under my nose - especially the fine Paxahau promotions. I've always wondered how it is that 'everyone' else makes it to all of these mid-week gigs and parties which don't even start until hours after I'm in bed or even about the time I get up. jeff
