saw autechre, matmos and rob hall last night at the middle east. it was terrible. straight up boring. rob hall played about two good songs, and the rest of his set was always in the process of regression into boring shock value noise. 30+ minutes of it. matmos was better than autechre, but they seemed very rushed and bored, so much so that i only knew it was matmos after they left the stage when someone told me they'd already played. they were doing something screeching with a bird cage which was cool for a bit. then autechre came on. the first track was very out of sync and repetitive. the next two songs were a little better, but could be because they were variations on songs i've heard. then the last song was definitely the only really interesting one. now i am not, nor have i ever been, a huge autechre fan, albeit of peel sessions 1 and parts of amber, and now i know better than to see them live again, or buy any more albums of theirs. they looked bored and like they wanted to leave the entire time. i did, however shake one of their hands in total silence for the fact that they are the potential for me that never was and never will be the object of my fanhood (or something). the squash courts show is gonna rock some socks. so is tortoise w/prefuse 73 and dj takemura. vzaem --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I think Ae are grater in terms of range of influence than RDJ. just my opinion. Don't take up the bait, flameheads. I only got a few days to finish out my squash sets. No, Stephen J Gould yelled at me on the train for asking him if he was Stephen J Gould. Fuck him. I became a creationist just to spite him. I think boston's in ruins but not in the good, hessian way. :) I wasn't as impressed with Ae as i hoped to be (first ae show). I think Matmos has one of the more interesting conceptual schticks going but live, it failed to coalesce into something tangible... and the less said about what was going on in between the better. nevertheless, i agree; the squash courts looks like lotta fun in the sun. tortoise should be great (another first for me). and i ran across this the other day and though i'd post it for other beantowners who can't get enough of that concrete sound: http://www.create-transmit.com/intransitive/pages/events.html erik statemusic

Actually Matmos were followed by Russell Haswell's DJ set (which included Jeff Mills, Farmers Manual and Naked City among other things), which was pretty intense and I kinda enjoyed except that it felt like he went on for too long. That dance track/noise routine kinda lost its charm after the first 2 or 3 times. I also enjoyed Matmos's set the most, but I don't know what gave you the impression they were bored. I think they're actually pretty busy and concentrated during performances. I thought Lesser's CDJ/Kaoss Pad thing sounded pretty great too. I have to say that the sound of The Middle East Downstairs probably doesn't do justice to Autechre's recent stuff, which I think demands a lot of clarity, and the only thing I could hear clearly were the drums (maybe it was just a bad mix). Having said that, I found their set rather static and uninvolving. Pretty much the whole set consisted of percussion loops coupled with hovering "ambient" sounds. Not much contrast or development, which might help make make the tracks more memorable. There were a couple of tracks where the percussion got more syncopated, but it still ended up just looping for like 10 minutes. There was one track where it sounded like they were using just the percussion track from "Second Scepe", but it didn't end up going into that track. I just wonder where they're gonna go after this ? My guess is they're just gonna abandon percussion altogether and just do some sort of electro-acoustic type thing. I don't know- they seem too interested in rhythm and sequencing to give it up completely, esp given that it forms the semi-compulsive focus of their live shows. I did find the secret track on EP7 and the Gescom MD to be pretty admirable and I hope they find some time to muck around in that pure studio style some more. The material holds up pretty well next to the stuff that inspired it (in particular EP7 track 0 vs. the GRM all-stars). -rob --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I'm planning on going to the Autechre show this May up in Boston, and living in Rhode Island, I thought it might be worth a gesture towards the list to see if anyone lives along my way and is interested in either catching a ride or meeting up at the venue. I wouldn't mind getting there slightly early for a drink and smoke or two to get warmed up for the show. I don't have any issues going to the show alone, and I might end up finding someone locally to go with me, but it wouldn't hurt bouncing into a list member and seeing the show with someone of equal interest. FYI I live in Narragansett RI, would be heading up to the city via 95 / 93. Sweet. Well all I know is from what was posted on this list -- May 5, apparently. Paradise. No word on tickets yet. I'll call around a little in the coming days to see what I can find out and get a price, etc. Where do you live?
