PREFUSE73: NEW ALBUM AND SINGLE
The new Prefuse 73 album "Surrounded By Silence" is released on 21st
March, preceded by a single "HideYaFace" on 21st Feb featuring EL-P and
Ghostface.
The album brings together the wide-ranging collaborations and
connections Scott has made with likeminded musicians over the last
couple of years whilst recording and touring as Prefuse73 (and with his
Savath & Savalas project), and is the pinnacle so far of his talent and
skills as a producer and orchestrator. Contributors include Ghostface
and El-P, Aesop Rock, Masta killa + GZA, D.J. Nobody, Beans, Broadcast,
Cafe Tacuba, Tyondai braxton, Claudia + Alejandra Deheza, The books,
Camu, Pedro, and Kazu (blonde redhead.)
Words from Scott himself - "This album is a collection of collaborations
between those I respect musically and those who I share personal
friendships with... the master plan was to not use any collaboration
that had been a commodity to sell a record..
Although I mixed almost as many instrumentals as collaborations, I want
people to hear what I've always wanted to hear on top of my music. I had
so many that there is about an hour's worth left off just to get this to
it's point of release... so there will be some sort of follow up to this
album. The collaborations left to come include - Tunde from TV On The
Radio, Madlib, Diplo, Four Tet, Mia Doi Todd, among others.."
"...the first single is called: HIDEYAFACE, and there are some M.C.s
rhyming on this particular track that maybe outside of "PrefuseRLand",
wouldn't rock on the same track - but they do indeed. In one corner we
have the man known as: EL-Producto, some know him as: EL-P. In the other
corner there is a: Tony Starks a.k.a Ghostface outta the island of
Shaolin.... THAT'S FEB.21st. - complete with an El-p mix and then will
follow a storm of shit to rock.."
More background to "Surrounded By Silence" from Scott -
"My music is hip-hop, there's no other way I've ever described it,
except for the fact that you won't hear it on the radio".
"All I can explain about this album is that it is the radio station of
my mind - as far as I'm concerned, my first love for music was hip hop
and as I grew, so much other music came into my life naturally that I
wanted to interchange things that I could foresee working... "
"for me to worry about sounding like the next "hot shit" or doing what
is considered "next level" is irrelevant... If I stagnate on the
formulas and boundaries I've even created for myself in my own music,
then I've lost. Therefore, I will continue to do things with my music
that sometimes will ring familiar and sometimes sound completely
different than what you'd expect from Prefuse, if you expect something
in particular."
"I feel that everyone I included on this album holds so much talent and
their willingness to work with me, regardless of who they are, is simply
a testament that music can still be seen as an exchange of energy and
vision despite the artist's background and what their music sounds like
stylistically. This exchange of ideas doesn't need to blow up the
airwaves and sell a million copies, if it gets to enough people to make
them happy during the moments it enters their ears, then my mission has
been accomplished...."
"I flew from Spain to NYC to work on this record due to most of my
collaborators being NYC based or at least in the area... and the record
itself took a lot longer than I ever imagined .. right now I'm on a
plane back to my home in Barcelona and will get the fuck out of this
crumbling country."
