Hi there Everyone on this list is into IDM, but how many of you are actually messing arround with music trying to create your own intelligent music and/or braindance? I've been messing arround with some synths and drumcomputers but I really wanted some ideas from the people on this list on the creation of complex drumpatterns. I'm messing arround with hydrogen (http://hydrogen.sourceforge.net/) but when listening to "Vordhosbn" (Aphex Twin, drukqs CD1) or "B" on Part 03 of Astrobotnia, it seems that there is something more to it as these gentlemen seem to be using several drumpatterns at once or some sort of generic program written in a dynamic music language (pure-data, galan, MAX, ...?)... Any tips? What are you music-making people using for software/hardware? Hi Tom, This has been discussed in depth many times in the past :) Check this link for starters: http://elists.resynthesize.com/search.php?q=drum+patterns&submit=go&lists%5Bidm%5D=on&lists%5Bidm-making%5D=on The general consensus seems to be that there's no magic program that creates intricate drum tracks, it just takes time and patience to write it all out. I use SuperCollider (http://sourceforge.net/projects/supercollider) for this. It's an audio-specific programming language rather than an application, so it takes some learning; on the other hand, drum pattern creation is only one of a nearly infinite number of things you can do with it. You can hear some studio tracks done with SC here: http://www.doubtfulpalace.com/artists/Shalmaneser/ Or a short extract of 100% live SuperCollider here: http://cafeshops.com/circularsystem.11038714 (the track "A Pound Of Creation Pie") Or a brief demo of my drum algorithm (just one raw process, not a finished piece of music) here: http://www.doubtfulpalace.com/artists/Shalmaneser/SCBeats.mp3 -- THE DOUBTFUL PALACE Free exquisite music http://www.doubtfulpalace.com --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

The sound engine has been ported, I believe, but the language has not. I don't know what the ETA is. I'm sure you could do the same sort of thing with Max/MSP or PD. -- THE DOUBTFUL PALACE Free exquisite music http://www.doubtfulpalace.com --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

yahoo says that the idm making list is closed to new membership and is in the process of being moved, but that's a better place to look for this sort of info. there are software programs to generate drum patterns, and i seem to remember richard d james mentioning in an interview that he was messing around with stuff like that (so he could spend more time shagging, or something). i'm not sure if he used it on tracks like "Vordhosbn" or what aleksi is up to in his stuff, but it's possible some people are catching on to those computer programs. i don't think it's really about how many drum machines you're using so much as it is about the fact that when you listen closely to your favorite complex idm drums, usually there are multiple drum samples for any given type of sound. multiple kick drum samples, snare samples, hhat samples, clicking, rim shots, all sorts of percussive samples. don't forget that synths make great drums too. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Tom Van de Wiele" <tom.vandewiele@gmail.com> To: <btallent@gmail.com> Cc: <idm@hyperreal.org> Sent: Monday, July 26, 2004 8:27 AM Subject: Re: [idm] creation of IDM drumpatterns

BBCut is a whole suite of algorithmic drum programming dedicated to these sorts of manipulations. (it's an extension set for SuperCollider). See http://www.sicklincoln.org/code.htm It includes the SQPusher simulation routine. There are research papers on this too. OSCILLATE--- exploring electronic nightlife tuesdays at THE BALTIC ROOM--1207 pine st. SEATTLE this tuesday!!!--- January 10, 2006 PAUL EDWARDS is back at the Baltic Room for an uncommon dj set! Several months back, Paul jumped the Oscillate ship to pursue his personal musical endeavors (and many of us have seen how valuable that time has proven to be). Now, only every so often does Paul rear his head from behind the 1200s at the KrAKt monthly; most other occasions are under the radar at your uncle's after party... So don't sleep on his special return to the lush, booming Baltic Room sound system!
