I find it hard to believe you've listed this. TEX has some terrific tracks, certainly ("Semi Detatched," "Majestic" rmx), some good but not great tracks ("Praying Mantra" edited painfully, "Xeper" rmx just like the LP version), and some positively dire stuff ("Persuasion" and the very disappointing "Analogue Bubblebath 3"). All in all, it's not a bad compilation by any stretch (filler is par for the course with comps, which sparked this thread in the first place), but I think the Volume people could have fit it on a single disc; I wouldn't miss a lot of those tracks. In reference to the best compilations to listen to from start to finish, here's my brief listing. 1) "Apollo" - a beautiful journey of ambient music. 2) "The Point Of No Return:Harthouse:Vol. I" - a great introduction to hard and soft trance. I just bought this eleven days ago, and it's been glued to my CD player. 3) "Trance Europe Express" - a who's who 2CD sampler of trance music. 4) "Nation 2 Nation" - I got this at The Orb show I saw in October. Similar to the Harthouse compilation. 8080808080808080808080808080808080808080808080808080808080808 0 Paul Rafanello 0 Nocturnal Emissions, NWW, 0 8 8 Hafler Trio, Illusion Of 8 0 Internet:808STATE@DELPHI.COM 0 Safety, Trance, Aphex Twin0 8080808080808080808080808080808080808080808080808080808080808

I find sometimes just the opposite. How many times have you heard a great song from some artist unknown to you, went out and found that artist's other release(s) only to find out the only thing decent they've ever done is the one song on that compilation? On the flipside, though, sometimes compilation tracks do sound/feel like they were just leftovers picked up off the cutting room floor... Either way, compilations are a great way of introducing many artists. I've become a big fan of all sorts of bands that I first heard on comps. _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

On a similar note, I've found that the compilation tracks from artists are far better than the full length albums from those same artists, especially if the comp track comes out before the album. Exhibit A- Skipsapiens with a great track on the Perspective Fragments comp and a wholly forgettable album. Exhibit B- VS_Price with a couple great tracks on one of the Bip Hop comps and likewise a forgettable album which, by the way, doesn't even sound like the same artist as the comp tracks. I always feel like I've been bait-and-switched after being impressed by a comp track and totally disappointed in the full length.

impressed by a comp track and totally disappointed in the full length. as an artist who may have done this to some listeners, i have this defense: compilation tracks can be seen as both a chance to get attention and a chance to experiment with things you might not normally do. some artists (like us) have broad enough styles that can shift around a bit. it depending on where we were artistically at the time, and the nature of the compilation. some tracks were very representative of things we've done on albums. others were appropriate for more experimantal comps and/or we didn't have a lot of time to write a more conventional song before the deadline. i know this may sometimes confuse or disappoint people when they want to pick up an album, but...oh well. try before you buy is my motto anyway. d. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Picking up the new issue of Wire reminded me that I haven't bought a decent compilation in a while... can anyone suggest any? Particularly in the classic 'we have a hot new sound / label / whatever and want to tell the world' vein. Not sure how new this is, but I just discovered the Fahrenheit Project compilation series myself. It's from a label called Ultimae in France, and the artists featured on each disc (there are 4 volumes now) have a very lush ambient sound to them. It's not glitchpop, not aphexy, actually maybe a very slight hint of new-agey-ness about them, but they have sound samples available (very good quality and long as well!)... You can also buy the 4 volumes together as a set for $50, or $14 each. "crash redevelopment" on co.ad.audio is pretty good. for me it takes a while to warm up, but the second 2/3 is well worth the (cheap) price of admission. good, glitchy, cool stuff. not too good with the descriptions right now. i think there's a review or at least a label profile in grooves magazine, or just go to their site and hear samples. www.coad.to d. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
