Well.. They are a (circa) ten-piece jazz-band from Norway. I heard them live about a year ago (Kim Hiorthøy was playing with them, but I don't know if he's actually part of the band), and they were /really/ good. Very energetic, with all sorts of instuments. It's sort of a combination of written compositions and group improvisations. I think "A livingroom hush" is their only release apart from an ep called "magazine ep", which is also recommended. -Stefan Sean Portnoy wrote:

Those of a slightly jazzual persuasion might be interested to know that we're streaming Jaga Jazzist's 'A Livingroom Hush' on the BBC site till Monday. It's been described as 'Charlie Mingus with the Aphex Twin up his arse' but I reckon it's more like Gil Evans and the High Llamas having tea with (a slightly sedated) Squarepusher. Anyway, it's good... http://www.bbc.co.uk/music/reviews/albumofweek.shtml cheers peter Peter Marsh - BBCi Music http://www.bbc.co.uk/music/ http://www.bbc.co.uk/music/jazz/ http://www.bbc.co.uk/music/experimental/ BBCi at http://www.bbc.co.uk/ This e-mail (and any attachments) is confidential and may contain personal views which are not the views of the BBC unless specifically stated. Okay...I know this is way late, but I'm finally getting around to playing some stuff I've had a while - and this is a real peach. I just ended up listening to them for the first time last week. I picked up an album of theirs along with the Phantomsmasher on Ipecac. Both releases really impressed me in rather different ways. I have yet to fully explore everything on the Jaga Jazzist. It is really something one needs to listen to numerous times to take in. Brandon --- The REAL Mxyzptlk <therealmxyzptlk@comcast.net> wrote:

I adore Living Room Hush, haven't yet got into The Styx (sounds like more of the same), but have just got hold of their Messenger EP (which might be a Norwegian only release I'm not sure) which predates Hush and is great. A friend described them as Tortoise with a wind section and a penchant for drill'n'bass - unfairly reductive, but passingly accurate. All the best, Colin. My curiosity is truly piqued as I'm a big fan of Rotoscope - sort of Jaga + digital shredder, but that singleunit url just gives me an uninformative shockwave and I can't get anywhere else - does the site have any samples? Singleunit.net - is that something different? I hadn't had much luck finding Martin Horntveth's stuff here in New York, so I went and looked around on soulseek. What I found was a track of his on a remix album of a band called Ulver alongside other remixers such as Fennesz, Neotropic, Pita, and Bogdan. Its called Ulver: First Decade in the Machines and its a pretty damn good collection of remixes. Good enough to pique my interest in Ulver themselves who turn out to be a Scandinavian metal band with all sorts of exciting non-metal tendencies. I'd kind of like to see more compilations of IDM artists remixing heavier non-IDM artists. Does anyone remember that Foetus remix album? That shit was awesome. Yea... and I couldn't figure out that singleunit website either, but I'm definitely curious to hear it. -Aaron ----- Original Message ----- From: donna summer <donnasummerwfmu@hotmail.com> Date: Monday, July 7, 2003 8:01 pm Subject: RE: [idm] Jaga Jazzist
