Yo playas, I've really been getting into hip-hop lately, a genre I have ignored for so many years. So I'm seeking for recommendations for really good indie hip-hop albums. I have enjoyed a lot of the stuff I've heard from Dej Jux, so I figured it would be a good place to start. The question then stands: what do you think is the best thing Def Jux has put out yet? That Ping Pong by the Anti-Pop Consortium is a pretty tight tune, would Arrythmia be worth purchasing? What about Herbaliser's Blow Your Headphones or Something Wicked This Way Comes? Or some hip-hop classics, are there some records you would consider essential? Yeah, I still think I should at least start with the indie-stuff - I wouldn't feel worth my Converses if I listened to mainstream hip-hop. thanks, .: visa tapani --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I like Aesop Rock's releases, although i like the older ones more than the newer ones. When I saw Beans perform with Prefuse, he also did a really good show so perhaps that would be a good album to pick up. Also, are you looking for hip hop with rapping over it, or just hip hop? And with rapping, what kind of rapping? -- eggytoast.com - eggtastic.com ------ it's in your grocer's freezer --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

if you're gonna go classic (which sort of automatically means somewhat mainstream), may i suggest Mos Def - Black on Both Sides Gang Starr - Moment of Truth (the Full Clip greatest hits comp is also good.) (and every project DJ Premier has produced is probably at least worth a listen.) Digable Planets -- Blowout Comb and Reachin' De la Soul -- all the early albums Tribe Called Quest -- again all the early albums. there is so much more great classic hip hop, but these are some of my favorites. be aware though, that they all have quite a different sound from the Def Jux style. as far as new stuff goes, chocolate industries has some good releases, like the stuff by Diverse, Push Button Objects, the East Flatbush Project - Tried by 12 remix comp (worth the purchase just for the autechre remix). The Urban Renewal comp is good, but somewhat uneven IMO. I also really like the Caural -- Stars on my Ceiling album. Personally, I'm not a huge fan of the Def Jux sound. I find the production is often too busy for me. i like a cleaner more sparse sound I guess. but i do like aesop rock and Mr. Lif. Oh and of course, RJD2's Dead Ringer is the best thing on the label. but to my ears it's quite different than everything else on there. it's definitely an instant classic. hope that helps, dave visa <v.kuoppala@pp.inet.fi> wrote: Yo playas, I've really been getting into hip-hop lately, a genre I have ignored for so many years. check: http://www.botanicadeljibaro.com hip-Hop as curated by the Beta Bodega Coalition, plus for all you idm freaks, they got remixes from Beta and Schematic folks on a few lps. Check: Serum, Cyne, Seth P. Brundel (part of Algorithim), and others. What else Sound Ink in New York has some good releases, that new Dr. Doom they put out is bad. New Souls of Mischief on Chocolate Industries and the new Push Button Objects on Choc is good. and of course counterflow, 5 Deez etc. that Lex label Warp is running, and Metatronix check Supersoul, Judah Mason, others Stonesthrow label give them a listen, J-Live, Large Professor, jesus there's to much, pick up an issue of Wax Poetics, Elemental, Xlr8r, whatever and cruise for hip-hop or find a good web site for reviews, what is a good web site for hip-hop reviews anyway? -a On Thursday, June 19, 2003, at 05:00 PM, dave jakhelln wrote:

If you like Ping Pong, Arrhythmia's worth the purchase. Just avoid the "vs." album with Matthew Shipp. Shipp is amazing, but Antipop sounds like they're taking a shit on these tracks. Some indie picks: cLOUDDEAD - (self title) Dose One, Why?, Odd Nosdam and friends make some of the best music I've ever heard. This music has amazing depth. I've heard them compared to Boards of Canada, and can easily see why. Their last EP (The Sound of a Handshake / This About a City) is even better, but vinyl only. Dilated Peoples - The Platform I don't know if these guys are still considered "underground," but this is one of my favorite "no bullshit," straight up hip hop records. Restiform Bodies - (self title) This record is all over the place. From ambient drones, to new wave, to drum 'n bass, to old school hip hop, they cover it all and manage to make it work. Fantastic lyrics on this one, too. No battle raps here. Classics: Beastie Boys - Paul's Boutique Adam, Adam, and Mike make some incredibly forward looking hip hop with the Dust Brothers. I can't believe this record is 14 years old. Deltron 3030 - (self title) Dan, Del, and Kid Koala make space age hip hop before that whole "Gorillaz" thing. De La Soul - Three Feet High and Rising Despite popularizing the "hip hop skit," this is one of the greats. Their sophomore effort (De La Soul is Dead) is also quite good. DJ Shadow - Endtroducing... Absolutely fantastic, if you're into the instrumental hip hop thing. If you're into RJD2, this is essential listening (the reverse also applies). See also: El Stew. Wu Tang Clan - 36 Chambers I keep waiting for them to top this. The Ghost Dog score (not the "soundtrack") comes close. Proceed with caution... your mileage my vary. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

No More Wig For Ohio (Odd Nosdam) is also a nice ride indeed...sort of a catchall pastiche molded into hip-hop pants. The Boards of Canada influence is apparent on this one as well. It's as if he challenges himself to make his own version of hip-hop from some of the most unlikely sources. jeff --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Everyone else has recommened most of what I'd go for except Anticon [ http://www.anticon.com ] but please ignore "Something Wicked This Way Comes" as it's more like an over produced pop exploration in pro-tools than hip hop. I was a big herbaliser fan until that album, but it really sucked ass. _muff._ xo --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

some echoes and some new voices. mostly backpacker fodder, cuz thats what I tend to feel: * cLOUDEAD - s/t (mush) : you need this, and it's hella cheap. 3X12 for $12??? their peel session 10" is wicked, as well. Boom Bip and Dose One - Circle (mush) : opened the floodgates... mush diversity. *El-P - Fantastic Damage (Def Jux) : hip-hop for the apocalypse, amazing album through and through. * Deep Puddle Dynamics - The Taste of Rain, Why Kneel? (anticon) : great collab album (dose, sole, slug, alias) * Jel - (meat and oil ep, greenball, etc) pretty much anything with his name on it is ill, beat-wise. * Wobbly - Wild Why (tb6) : dunno if it's 'hip-hop', but I think it is. so full it could burst. yoyoyoyoYOOYOYYOYYOOYOYOOYYOOOO!!!! *Atmosphere - Overcast! (rhymesayers) my favorite from them; all 1000 pieces are here in this puzzle box. others worth checking: Deltron 3030 - (s/t) 75 ark Aesop Rock (def jux) Lexoleum cd (lex) .... playayaout. -j.

I definitely recommend the French TTC (Big Dada/Ninja Tune) as they are bringing something quite experimental to hip-hop with a great sense of humor. Yeah, I still think I should at least start with the indie-stuff - I wouldn't feel worth my Converses if I listened to mainstream hip-hop. thanks, .: visa tapani --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I like Def Jux and would rank 2 of their albums as the label's best: EL-P "Fantastic Damage" and Cannibal Ox "The Cold Vein".

Old: De La Soul "3 Feet High and Rising" & "De La Soul is Dead" Public Enemy - Their first 5 albums, although I like "Fear of a Black Planet" the least of these. Slick Rick "The Great Adventures of Slick Rick" Showbiz & AG "Runaway Slave" O.C. "Word... Life" Ultramagnetic MCs "Critical Beatdown" Gang Starr - A couple of good albums, I'd recommend starting with their greatest hits comp, "Full Clip" though. Boogie Down Productions "Criminal Minded" & "My Philosophy" MC Shan "Down By Law" Black Sheep "A Wolf in Sheep's Clothing" Mantronix "The Album" EPMD "Strictly Business" & "Unfinished Business" Run DMC "Run DMC", "King of Rock" and "Raising Hell" Tribe Called Quest "Low End Theory" Eric B & Rakim "Paid In Full" & "Follow the Leader" ("Don't Sweat the Technique" had some great moments also, but gawd, some of those lyrics are pathetic). Beastie Boys "Paul's Boutique" Pete Rock & CL Smooth "Mecca and the Soul Brother" & "The Main Ingredient" Wu Tang Clan "36 Chambers" New: cLOUDDEAD "cLOUDEAD" Jel - "10 Seconds" Sage Francis "Personal Journals" EL P "Fantastic Damage" Cannibal Ox "The Cold Vein" Boom Bip "Seed to Sun" Aesop Rock "Daylight & "Labor Days" Company Flow "Funcrusher Plus" & "Little Johnny From The Hospital" Mike Ladd "Welcome to the Afterfuture" Dalek "From Filthy Tongue..." DJ Shadow "Endtroducing" (more of a turntable album than hip hop album, but it's in the same ballpark) The Roots "Illadelph Halflife" & "Things Fall Apart" Mr Lif "I Phantom" RJD2 "Deadringer" These lists are just off the top of my head, there are many I'm forgetting, but this is a respectable starting point. Have fun. cheers, Tommy --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Well done! You've truly named a great bunch there. I want to reiterate that Rjd2's Deadringer is a Must Have. Why it hasn't attained "Endtroducing..." type fame is incomprehensible. PS: for the LOCATION peope: I'm in Cape Town, South Africa. I am Female. I have two children. I am *shudder* Over Forty. Hardly the 'average' IDM-List demographic, I should think ;-) I * --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
