So did anybody go to the Apple Ipod dj event thing last Friday? Anything interesting? I wandered into the store at the Grove in LA. Not that I have one or even am interested in getting one. I was just there to see how the djs were using them. TL Smith (of the ELM posse) was on when we showed up and as far as I could tell, he was just playing back some songs that were recorded into the Ipods. No manipulation, no beatmatching, no effects/DSP. The only cool thing about the event was that he was playing some pretty cool tunes (Quench?, some others I couldn't place) for people who never hear anything like that. The "surprise dj" was BT. When he showed up, we headed for the doors quickly.

Are moby or BT "idm?" I always thought they were more housey or big beat than that? More like "IDM-Lite", not that there's anything wrong with that, but they're a far cry from stuff that was coming out even back in '96 when it came to music that interested me. Some people into electronic music I've spoken to over the past few years have thought of BT as some phenomenal musician, but I think they base that more on production values than actual interesting songs. I've heard 2 tracks, which were pointed out to be as 'good ones,' and was wholy unimpressed. I had to play Ruby Vroom 2 times to cleanse my brain :D -- eggytoast.com - eggtastic.com ------ it's in your grocer's freezer --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Moby was great back in the day, as they say, and his recent output is annoying, but his blog was interesting when he got attacked by the cat. Cube wasnt too bad, but it wasnt too good, so lets leave Proem at +.3 I guess thats what happens when you take a decent idea for a movie and muddy it up with that silly ending, and that one really, really cheesy falling scene that looked like they used stock footage of a falling blowup doll. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I've heard of NSYNC, and heard that he did some remix for them, but never heard it. I've probably heard NSYNC in the grocery store or something, but my radio listening habits are limited to NPR, and I don't watch MTV, so I couldn't make a judgement call one way or another. I guess that's a metaphorical rock of some kind. From what I know of BT (limited mostly to his looks) though, I'd say he was bought out long before he remixed a boy band single. He name-dropped Sasha in one blurb I saw, didn't need to hear anything more after that. w --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

producing a track for n'sync for a fuckload of cash is not selling out, it's doing your job if you're a producer who's trying to make a living. i'd do it in a heartbeat if there was a paycheck involved. i hate working shitty desk jobs instead of making money off my music. that shit logic about making money off music equals "selling out" only works if you're in high school. what IS selling out is when BT puts his smiling face in an ad for ANY motherfucker who throws a free unit and a couple $K at him ... seriously BT dude man ... is there any musical product you won't shill for? how do i get that hookup or do i have to look like a surfer boy too? -asterprox --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

umm, is it just me or haven't they always been kind of pompous? it seems they've alway had a pretty antagonistic relationship with the public. and when you self-identify as THE leading light in cutting edge sound design, you're gonna come off as pompous. but i think it's fair to say they've been thinking of themselves in that way for years. there also really f*ing smart and talented, so i'm happy to cut 'em a little slack. personally, i detested Confield, but i'm finding Draft 7.30 much more accessible. my first listen through really blew my mind. i also think that greater accessibility was a response to public reaction to the last album, whether they want to admit it or not. That's funny - I find Confield much more accessible than Draft 7.30... that being said, I think their work has always been *very* uneven. In my opinion, Chiastic Slide and the Garbage EP are their true masterpieces. One thing that really needs to come out though is their own "26 Remixes for Cash"... Warp Records, are you reading this ?
