(quantazelle) [[[[from the modsquare interview----"I think more revolutionary things will be done with computers when you're working close to the language of the computer. I think it's sadly ironic that these emulation programs call themselves "Logic" when they seem so far removed from that actual level of the computer."]]]] i wonder if she's ever attempted programming in assembler or writing dsp code? not only is it extremely time consuming but the entire situation is static! In terms of making sounds/music the way to really create 'revolutionary' output is to have some semblance of realtime control. Pick up a copy of supercollider(oh wait, she's anti-mac also) well then try one of the csound clones, its ridiculous and miserable coding out long instruments and then coding out the score to run in them, and the music? well, you'll just have to wait for it to compile....;( Now max/msp is quite nice and gives low level access to loops and programmable filters and whatnot, but it seems by quantazelle's standards the gui would be far too removed or just a long sentence of metaphors holding you back from the 'true' magic that takes place in the microprocessor. Logic: the program is built with logic, the program runs with logic, and the most logical thing to do when making music is to work in a manner which allows the time domain aspect of music to be manageable in a timely fashion. I suppose for those who'd rather spend more time coding/debugging/and compiling then to hell with abstractions. the thing is, computer logic is actually an abstraction from human thought and action....just in a different direction, so if you're a human, well you better enjoy abstracting away! also, if you want to work at the absolute lower level of the processor, buy a nord lead/nord modular or any electronic music gear(software synths do it too). you can instantly touch the glory level of dsp logic...and if you want to sequence them in complicated ways well, with logic, max/msp or even a free gnu linux seqeuncer, you can do so and maintain extreme levels of control over the in/output. quantazelle has nice ideas, they just seem a bit naive. i guess i felt the same way at one time, which led to massive amounts of wasted(well not really wasted, i guess, but fairly unproductive) time with supercollider, csound, and c++/java libraries. who really gives a fuck, maybe its the blue hair and dress and the bullshit about collaberating and speaking of herself in 3rd person. but thats way way beside the point. __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yeah, that interview's kind of old and prematurely manifesto-ish. I've since then played with PD and CSound, made some interesting things happen sonically, but not musically. Having to code everything out beforehand with CSound doesn't leave a lot of room for improv. And yes, it does take a lot of effort to debug code and whatnot, and then theres little room for spontenaity and fun. It got to be rather frustrating. Anyway, failed expirament.. I'm moving on. There's an interview up on Modsquare.com now with the 8 Bit Construction Set. Those guys are ubergeek, moreso than me, and they do their thing well. Hats off to them. The third-person deal was part of this "persona" thing I was working on, hence the blue hair + bit of an attitude. I was just talking with some friends of mine and one of them joked about the burgening "Chicago Persona School," with Fischerspooner (who went to the Art Institute) being the most notable. I was going to use "Quantazelle the persona" for the Laptronica performance / competition, but Quantazelle the music project doesn't neccessarily need it at this point. Laptronica is another expirament trying to answer the question of How we can make laptop performances more exciting for a larger audience? Answer: have teams of laptop musicians compete to be the most entertaining, in a "professional wrestling" manner. The previous events have been successful, and the competing musicians were able to reach more people with their music than they had done previously, as well as have fun, which is a welcome relief from the terse academia that tends to permeate this genre. There's a minisite here: http://www.modsquare.com/laptronica So... I've got a ton of live shows coming up in Chicago, we'll see what I decide on for the performative aspect at each. I've been playing with different software that allows me to create more musically-complex compositions (complex in comparison to my own previous work, not in comparison to other musicians) and allowed me to integrate more of my earlier expirience with traditonal instruments. It's rather different than where I thought I'd end up when I started... Oh well; such is art, I suppose. -Quantazelle --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
