Whatever else you hear by them, be sure you hear Beanfield's "The Seasons (Swag remix)" on the Om Lounge 4 comp. (you might have to, uh, download it or something) - their single best track - I'm going to be a nerd and quote my own review: "A conga-fueled rhythmic river flows inexorably over a syncopated but loose jazzy bottom end with a circle of electric piano chords supported by cello floating above. The vocals alternate between Blakean pastoral-mystic spoken segments and an understatedly beautiful melody that mysteriously distributes the lyrical syllables at uneven intervals across the bar lines." "The Seasons" is one of the best tracks on their 1999 full-length, Human Patterns. I'm listening to 1998's self-titled debut on Compost for the first time in a while - it starts out inauspiciously with a sort of cheese-funk track - the downside of the whole Compost records nu-jazz thing (IMHO) - the second track had me thinking "wow, this sounds like a faster, more chirpily electronic take on something from Can's "Saw Delight" - looking at the sleeve, I see the track is called "Elektro-Kraut" so I guess that's what they want you to think. Overall, the first is more electro and more intentionally inorganic while "Human Patterns" has more of a latin-percussion serious early-70s kozmigroov feel - similar to Jazzanova or even Ian O'Brien - preferable for me but perhaps not everyone.
