So... my daughter started High School today. To celebrate I foolhardily downed 3 tots of Absinthe (make the heart grow fonder) and after dinner subjected the entire family to sit through Alice's Restaurant (sparked by some random comment). Which led us to conjecture: does this 1967 release on Reprise make Arlo Guthrie the world's first rapper? Not really -- no more than Bob Dylan's talking blues make him the first rapper, or Rambling Jack Eliot etc. As others have pointed out, the origins of rap are African, or more directly, Jamaican. But the idea of telling a story and accompanying it with music goes back to before written language. Homer recited his epic poems to music. Arlo Guthrie was, however, the first guy to get moderately rich off of hippy humor, which should count for something. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

altough Alice's Restaurant is ruined by his crappy acting... so it shouldn't count for that much. skism --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Actually, as many scholars will be happy to point out, Homer is not the originator of 'his' poems, but rather just the first to actually write them down. They stemmed from a long oral storytelling tradition (and undoubtedly changed over time) and his telling is just one remembrance of the stories. The poetic patterns used and the use of key figures and actions at certain times kept the stories cohesive and Homer was just someone who learned the stories. He also happened to write, so we know the stories as Homer's, rather than the actual originator's. Not that there's anything wrong with being the first storyteller to write down the stories, but he wouldn't've claimed the stories as his own, so why should we? :) derek -- eggytoast.com -------------- commerce soon: eggtastic.com --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Well -- I think the actual origins of rap lay back in West Africa, traveling musician/singers carrying news and royal announcements, social commentary, etc. Later lines of descent visible in calypso, reggae ['toasting'], blues, and hiphop. I'm not sure where this leaves Arlo Guthrie! John
