new Sigur Ros album. What a complete waste! I can't imagine anything more boring than "()" I've never been much of a fan, but a friend was raving about a recent live show of theirs and put on the cd. It sounded to me like nothing more than re-hashed Pink Floyd with all the prog-rock symphonic trappings. One song even had the exact same chord progression of Stairway to Heaven.

Hahaha!!!! You'll probably get publicly beaten for that, but I must say that I thoroughly agree. Being a dinosaur, I grew up with those bands and was hugely into Yes (oh come one people, Roundabout is wonderful!) and never bought a single Pink Floyd album after Relics. I totally agree; () is terrible. I have been a huge Sigur Ros fan ever since I saw them live at Coachella a few years back. Their first album was a fucking masterpiece. SOmeone here criticized "Agaetis..." for being a collection of songs and not a cohesive album. Even if I thought that was true, and I don't think it is, I wouldn't care. The songs on "Agaetis..." were beautifully crafted. They had great melodies, stunning arrangemets, and they evolved over time. Sigur Ros clearly had a lot of great ideas and executed those ideas with great skill when making that album. (), on the other hand, is boring, shoe-gazer, prog-rock. Instead of writing great songs, Sigur Ros has elected to bludgeon their listeners with mopey, repetitive dirges that all sound more or less the same. Worse yet, nearly all of these songs were fully formed and played during their 2001 tour. So, not only is () a bad album, it is a bad album that most Sigur Ros fans had already heard before it was released. Most bands play their songs live before they are relased on an album, but take the time in the studio to develop and experiment with those songs. Not so with (). I know that Von was the first album. In fact, I own Von. You're right, It just skipped my mind. I should have said last album instead of first album. My bad.

I was really harsh on () in my previous post. I actually like it in spots too. Tracks 2, 3, and 4 are pretty good. Song 8, "Pop Song", has a great ending, but the first 6 minutes are dull as hell. I have been pretty brutal to () simply because it's so disappointing. If it didn't have to follow AB, I would probably view it as an "okay" album. It doesn't hold a candle to AB, though. The songs just aren't nearly as strong. JMHO.

That's a pretty good comparison in some ways. However, MHTRTC and Geogaddi are not terribly different soundwise, whereas AB and () are quite different. I was pretty shocked at how stripped down () was compared to AB. this is an interesting debate. i didn't really find the new sigur ros album to be the biggest disappointment of the year (I give that award to both Amon Tobin and Primal Scream), but I see where your coming from with the boards of canada comparison. in the case of the production values, Sigur Ros have taken the path lesser traveled, in which they release a lofi album AFTER their huge production masterpiece. usually its the other way around, and people are bitching that the band went overboard with the 'lush soundscapes' and 'studio polish'. Modest Mouse is an example. I think of () as kind of an interim album. The band has admittedly talked about the production as sort of a "chore" to release the material they played live. They felt obliged to put these songs down in the studio. Agaetis is not Sigur Rós' first album. "Von" from 1997 is their debut. And a very good one too, a lot darker and more intense than "Agaetis Byrjun" About "()", i really like the first four songs of the album. The rest is not so good, though.
