recently picked up a few comps that are real nice, those being the delsin's going thru life, toytronic's neurokinetic and benbecula's music vol 1& 2. anyone have any suggestions for label compilations that are in the vein of the above? also, anyone comment on how representative the funckarma track on neurokinetic is of the bulk of their work? really enjoying that track a lot. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I'd say it's pretty representative; their pieces tend to feature tight intricate crunchy glitch-infused beats overlaid with melodic melancholic synth textures. You can't go far wrong with their _Solid State_ full-length, or their release under the Quench moniker, _Exclude_. alan/beyond...sound ------------------------------------------------- This mail sent through IMP: www-mail.usyd.edu.au --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Although it's mixed, the tracks are allowed time to blossom well - the Quatermix CD (Quatermass) is pretty nice, taking some very good tracks from the Personal Settings series among their artist roster. Impressive. jeff --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Speaking of the Delsin comp., there's a new one out called "Day By Day" which showcases how well the label does that deep Detroit meets the UK vibe (think B12, Stasis, old A.R.T., LA Synthesis, etc.). Smooth and lush. jeff --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I heartily recommend this compilation. The CiM track on it one of the best things I've heard, plus the Lackluster remixes on it are ace aswell. My two fav idm comps are the two Morr Music ones, 'Putting the Morr back in Morrisey' and the Slowdive inspired/covered 'Blue Skied an' Clear' Check any online store for the track listings, but if you liked the Toytronic one, i think you would be into these also. Oh, and also the Annex: Cottage Industries 2 on Neo Ouija, tho i haven't heard the first compilation. -thor On Mon, 11 Nov 2002, stacey van buskirk wrote:

the funckarma track on Neurokinetic is fairly indicative of the rest of their stuff, although most of their output is darker and incorporates more of the crunchy beats/minor chords aesthetic. Check out "Solid State" or "Parts" as you'll probably enjoy either one of them. I highly recommend the first "Cottage Industries" compilation, much more so than the 2CD successor which is also decent, but CI is worth it for the opening track by Phonem alone, and then other great tracks from Plod, Bauri, Quinoline Yellow... Other good compilations I would recommend checking out, based on your likes: v/a "Cashier Escape Route" (City Center Offices) includes exclusive tracks from ISAN, Pole, Phonem, Arovane, Goodiepal, Opiate, Geiom, Solvent, Styrofoam, etc v/a "EVSC1:01" (Expanding) label sampler including Benge, Abfahrt Hinwil, Zorn, etc. v/a "Putting the Morr Back In Morrissey" (Morr) Christian Kleine, Phonem, Styrofoam, Lali Puna, Solvent, etc. If you enjoy Funckarma-styled stuff I recommend the comps put out by their label... someone has already mentioned "Men With Boxes" and I also recommend "Nummer Een" and "Nummer Drei" which preceded it. On the crazier, less melodic side I recommend the compilations released by Schematic, especially "Ischemic Folks" (Richard Devine, Jeswa, Phoenecia, Metic, etc) and "Lily of the Valley" (Richard Devine, Phoenecia, Jake Mandell, o9, Delarosa & Asora etc). and lastly on the more jazz-inflected side the Hefty 12" compilation (a 2CD set of all their prior 12" releases) "Immediate Action" is solid through and through, tracks from Telefon Tel Aviv, A Grape Dope, Twine, Savath + Savalas, T.Raumschmiere, Process, etc. m.mercer :: design + sound design :: http://www.matthewmercer.com/ sound :: http://www.mattmercer.com/

comps...with so many coming out all the time, a virtual avalanche ensues... i second the emotion on all those listed above and chime in with the following: + night owls 2 (deluxe) - absolutely stunning volume in the series, with not a duff track...featuring soft pink truth (1/2 of matmos), electric birds, warmdesk, jetone, emisor, bizz circuits, pan american & more + opensource: code - more beautiful electronic warmness from the david moufang crew & friends, including akufen, jan jelinek, sutekh, brinkmann, alex cortex and the usual suspects and on the minimal (and remix) tip: + process 'reprocessed' - best remix collection of the year? it's certainly up there...w/bern, fax, markus guentner, philippe cam, joachim spieth, jonas bering, tomas jirku, broker/dealer, move di, fairmont & more + multiplex 'mixt' - w/mr. projectile, animals on wheels, eu, isan, monolake, funckarma, herrmann & kleine, kettel, lackluster, phonem...a virtual allstars of the blip and bleep... + triple r 'friends' & 'total 4' (both kompakt) - where kompakt treads, others follow...the triple r, as mix discs go, is especially inviting, and doesn't suffer from over-repetition (m. mayer's 'fur immer' is another fine example of a mix disc done right)...the 4th volume in the 'total' series isn't the best (#3 hits that spot), and nearly veers into force inc.'s proposed 'digital disco' realm, but is more than worth the price of admission. and the beat goes on... darren bergstein editor/publisher e|i magazine + music electronic and otherwise + http://www.ei-mag.com --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
