Touching Extremes:
This is quite particular, as - maybe for the first time in Mirror's
history - there is practically no droning in the 41 minutes of the
recording. "Solaris" is a silent, sparse landscape made of strange detuned
piano notes, small percussive touches, long absences and natural
reverberations. The cover presents Chalk and Heemann walking in the
countryside, completely alone: this photo gives a good idea of what this
music is. It's Mirror in their spirit, though not via the usual sounds
you're accustomed to; their depth and sensitive humanity is just as strong
and - at the same time - beautifully frail, as always.--Massimo Ricci

An out-of-nowhere release from an intriguing
one-man studio project, "Cassia Fistula" is Sydney
based Brendan Walls' debut solo outing. Utilizing
prepared and found sound objects- Brendan uses
homemade machines to create this music without
the use of digital technology or effects processing.
Walls has invented a concentrated, enveloping and
transcendent electroacoustic sound palette.
"Cassia Fistula" comprises of three distinctive
tonal explorations that are truly hallucinatory.
Tumultuous and shifting yet gargantuan and
immovable, these works create a state where
movement and stasis co-exist. Unfolding the
monumental within the intimate, the results are
beautiful, surrealist, organic blocks of sound.

BRENDAN WALLS - CASSIA FISTULA (CD by Idea Records)
Sydney-based Walls releases his debut solo disc Cassia Fistula, a
work of electro-static energy and vibrance. The disc is split into
three sections, raging with stealth, soaring noise frequencies.
Drawing from high pitch tones and angular drones, this newcomer is
working with Oren Ambarchi (Ritornell, Staubgold) whose minimal
compositions and collaboration work are evident on the mix work in
sections one and three. Working with defective hi-fi equipment and
homemade electronic devices, Walls has developed a trip-like
exploration of deep, organic (cassia fistula - a 10 meter tree)
sound-sphere, not for the passive listener. This is not for
relaxation, this is not click/cut/glitch, this is not dark ambient.
This is discovery, almost improvised, in unfolding beauty, its nature
warns of the dark side of the power behind its ornamental exterior.

While some are stylists or number crunchers, and some use a computer to achieve
a salon-like efficiency, Brendan just cuts hair. And while he might have a pink
tank top on or a particular fixation on flowers (the Cassia Fistula being both
his email, label name, and name of his first-born), he really is a barber
through and through. And next time, I'll go to him, and have him hone down on
my head, buffing it into a milky pearl of skull, the hair a puddle below.
