the three cds and two vinyls currently rotating @ my home (whenever i'm not making musick): alva noto - prototypes (cd) - imho alva noto is one of the best of the clicks and cuts fraction. i love the funkyness of his minimal arrangements and the pure quality of the sounds... astrobotnia 1 - (cd) i wanna kill everyone, satan is good, satan is my pal" - they bring back some much needed fun into idm morton subotnick - touch/a sky of cloudless sulphur. (cd) - yes, i am very much into electroacoustics and i am a great fan of subotnick. although "the wild bull" and "silver apples on the moon" are better known, i prefer these two recordings (which are on one cd, together with "gestures" - unfortunately i have only the stereo-cd version, as there exists a 5.1 dvd version on mode records), especially the rythmic parts in "a sky..." they reach a fuckedupness and extatic density which i only encountered on some of coils best moments and the later ae stuff ae - gantz graf - well, we were not supposed to bring up ae again, but: i had the mp3s of this release for a while now, and although i LOVE the tracks, i never was completely satisfied with the sound... now i finally got the vinyl, and it sounds soooo much better (even than the cd, which i also listened to, to compare) it seems the vinyl was mastered much better and much more precise than the cd... hans platzgumer and catriona shaw - miss me lp - electronica meets rnb. coproduced by g.potutznik (g.deluxxe, etc.) and cowritten by platzgumer/shaw. a very nice lp, even if it took me some time to get into it. in the beginning i was irritated by the coldness... but now i love it. the future of popmuzik so, not being in highschool any longer did not change me being a nerd and trying to impress my teachers... lol, hidari At 16:46 23.08.2002 -0400, Oneaphex@aol.com wrote:

I'll say something about this.. I've had gantz graf for a while now. It wasn't until after hearing it on a good pair of headphones that I finally *really* enjoyed it. There is a bunch of things going on behind the noise, and it's really interesting. Much more than I noticed on first listen. I totally believe you that the vinyl sounds better. This track is really growing on me. I like the direction. conner

For sure... He's one of the few in the genre who masters so well the art of creating those, uh, precise "paths of tension". I sampled very short fragments of the recent "transform" at a store a while ago and that seemed even better, though I haven't bought it yet for some reason. (Actually, for a very precise reason...)

I've seen this mentioned several times on the list. I should probably check that out. How do the three releases compare? Is the situation similar to Pole where owning one of the three CDs pretty much suffices? In that case, which one would be preferable? Etc.

When it comes to Morton Subotnick, for me, there is a very strong dividing line separating the great from the awful. IMO, again: Silver Apples/Wild Bull goes in the great category. Return/Key to Songs goes in the awful category. From this, I induced the rule that early Subotnick is good and late Subotnick is bad. Which would seem to indicate that "Touch" (1969) would be good and would leave an aura of incertitude around "A Sky of Cloudless Sulphur" (1978) -- or perhaps I could infer that it is a merely acceptable piece... Per this rule, "Gestures" would be awful, being a very recent work (1998-2000). Any comments/further opinions on this? Maybe I should also point out an artist who has deeply impressed me recently: Janek Schaefer. It's not IDM (more in the microsound vein) but what the heck. He creates music with multi-armed turntables of his own fabrication. But that interesting factoid is not the point; the point is that he makes fantastic music, warmly atmospheric, with very nicely interoperating multiple layers. Yada yada yada... I don't have time to describe it more precisely. Do check it out. ("Pulled Under" on AudiOh! -- and if you can catch him live, don't miss the occasion. I first heard his music live at Mutek and it was a revelation.) g. -- Guillaume Grenier - gollum@videotron.ca in space there is no north in space there is no south in space there is no east in space there is no west --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

yes, transform is great, too. i love all the stuff by alva noto. and i love his label raster noton. i have 9 out of the 12 20 to 2000 releases and they are great as well. especially coil's and ilpo vaisanen's.

this, imo, is quite true. subotnick really excels on the buchla synth, with his early compositions. some of the later ones (including gestures) do have some interesting aspects sometimes, but i do not consider them great music. i have yet to check out more recent stuff. i listened to "the key to songs" once, and did not really like it. i rarely listen to gestures. usually i just listen to one of the other two pieces, with "a sky.." being my absolute favourite. it has amazing rythmic structures, and, imo, the same qualities as his earlier work. great sounds from the buchla, and a great vibraphone part in it (it seems, the vibraphone was recorded, processed and then used in the composition aplying tape-cut techniques (but this is just "some" information, and might be untrue. i really have to obtain the dvd version, though... (and the player, and the 5.1. set to go with it....;) i should add, that i got heavily into subotnick, after interviewing richard devine, who told me that he "tries to compose according to the same principles and aesthetics as morton subotnick, but with beats, where he uses melody"
