No. The current business model for the music industry largely circulates
around the copyright ownership. The longer a record label can maintain
ownership of a piece of music, the more money they make. For example,
the value of masters that belong to very successful artists/bands like
the beatles or rolling stones have increased in value over the years.
People still buy beatles albums. Also, when a company wants to license
music for a TV or radio commercial the owner of the music has the
opportunity to make more money.
In response to all of the copyright games the RIAA an US government want
to play, I have created an business model for my record label that
replies with a big fat middle finger in the face of money hungry scum. I
have created an online archive of mp3 that are available for free
download. Go ahead and download the trax, copy them and pass them on to
as many people as want. Why not? It's easier to freely distribute music
than try and control digital distribution. Listeners that dig the music
can pick ten of their favorite trax and I'll dj them into a continuous
mix and mail them listener a copy of the mix. So you pay for a custom dj
mix, but you don't have to pay for the original trax.
