i have to agree with this completely, and then take it a bit further. being
something of a jaded ex-candy kid gone straight audiophile, i can understand
where a great deal of the animosity towards that sort of scene and sound
comes from. there are quite a few artists out there who really don't earn
their keep in my opinion, but 4/4 and repetition is not necessarily trite.
for me, a lot of juding the merits of that sort of music comes from a sort
of deontological perspective. that is to say, what is the motivation for
the rep? you take a look at something like psychic tv and the infinite beat
era, and you recognize motive and purpose. psst...it's about synchronicity.
sonic and photic stimulation to provide a channel in which the exposed
individual can synchronize. you can consider it primitive if you like, but
it needs to be acknolwedged as also being human. take laying down a 4/4
track at 120bpm for example...that particular beat is an emulation of a
fetal heartbeat. motive. purpose. i think the point is just that it _can_
be there. an excercise in cyclic presentation needn't always be mindless.
blanket statements are dangerous. if you don't like it, that's fine. don't
listen. don't go. if you think you just don't understand it, listen again.
otherwise, you're essentially a self-professed hypocrite considering your
declared preference for densely technical music.
