SuperCollider - real time synthesis and signal processing software for the macintosh. it's an object oriented language and virtual machine (version 3 will have two virtual machines) written by james mccartney. if you HATE programming, you probably wouldn't like SC. if you like to be challenged but don't want to be 'restricted' you would probably enjoy SuperCollider. there are no sequencing grids. there is no play button. there are no notes. you build everything. you define what a note value is. you define what 'play' is. you compose through algorithms. you write your 'plug ins' (version 3 will support c++ externals...) you can also modify existing classes, or write you own classes. and SC supports OSC. one cpu + sc = anythingyouwant (even tweaky beats...) cheers, christian

i can't comment on supercollider, but lidell tore the roof off when i saw him at nesh in los angeles. he was sending very metallic, roughed-up hip hop beats flying off into hectic breaky chaos and then reining them back in (sort of) as he rhymed about who knows what. it wasn't easy to make out the actual words, so much. the feeling, however, was completely there. he quite simply bounced shit and managed to drop bits of damn soulful singing in the process. at times, the quality was that of a more straight-up or seasoned r&b vocalist coming in over a crackling, overamped shortwave radio, maybe, and you had, say, a head full of ether. don't get me wrong, he wasn't crooning. i mean, the pace was quick. the reality, of course, was that it was an very amped electronics jockey hollering a unique brand of fx-drenched funk into a loud pa, but i needed some kind of comparison. happily, there was also much distortion and the more-or-less rhythmic use of feedback as he repeatedly jammed the microphone into the monitor as punctuation to his dancing(?). not to mention the fact that his beatboxing was spot on. all this said, there were several other great performances. lidell's jumped out at me because i'd been sent into such a blissful orbit by dntel immediately before. the only unfortunate part of the night was that lusine's set was altogether too short. jason __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
