Ah, yah, although I bitched quite a bit about the 2nd disc and the cover track, I do think the rest of disc one is pretty good. Too bad that isn't a part of his live show anymore. Judging from the press release I read, the live CD is of his recent live show which mostly consists of him drinking a fifth of vodka while twiddling with a couple knobs on a DSP box that a DAT with his current Go Plastic type stuff plays off of. Oh yea... and he slips in an unreleased track or too. Woo-fucking-hoo! It was entertaining enough when I saw it live, but I'd prefer it didn't inflate the cost of his new album. This might seem a bit unnecessary to say, though it does tie into the discussion. Squarepusher is the only big idm artist that I feel worthy of the extreme hype he gets. You know, the big name Warp artists? The people I can actually find in a Borders Music Store... ae, afx, boc. They are great, but I don't really understand the hype, as they say. Certainly, valid points have been made about too much focus being placed on too few artist, and I generally agree, however, Squarepusher is [and I've felt this for over three years now] by far the most in touch with what I care to hear in music. I feel I am fairly diverse, but I often even feel guilty that I hold one musician so much higher than any other musician. I just feel strange that the most mainstream of the genre I listen to appeals to me more than the slew of "smaller" releases I've had the pleasure of hearing. I guess what I am trying to say is that I will want to hear anything related to the man's music that I can get my hands on. The live set, while it may seem unnecessary, will appeal to me in a manner apart from something new he will release. The way I see it, I'll be getting both together. The cover of Love Will Tear us apart is pretty sweet, he stays pretty true to the original. I was expecting a fucked up mashup so I was really happy to hear this. He's obviously a fan of JD and isn't trying to have a pisstake on the track. Eeep...while I like what Tom does with the vocal intonation (the whispering approach serves the lyrics very well), I'm a little put-off by the rigidity of the drums/bass/guitar execution. One of the beautiful things about JD's music, in my opinion, was that it was always open to human rhythmic sloppiness...that Stephen Morris wasn't always *right* on with each drum tap, that Ian rarely sang a single note in-tune or precisely on the beat, that Bernard would sometimes rush his strumming. Those imperfections seemed as much a part of the song's structure as the actual chords, melodies, or lyrics--they lent a passion you can't quantify on sheet music. I certainly can't fault Tom for hitting every note as written (or originally intended in the musical notation) though. I just think it wasn't the best choice for his method of performing/recording. I think the live CD is being released so that he can complete his contract and start MEN with AFX. I haven't heard anything from either disk, but I'm pretty excited about doing so. I agree with Brandon (again) in saying that Tom J. has always been an artist of distinction. I have to agree, the recording quality is complete shit. I'd heard the mp3s before actually getting a review copy and had hoped like hell what I heard was not really the material getting released. But no luck. Not very impressed with anything about the live material to be honest. Perhaps in the live setting I would have enjoyed it much more. I've been a Tom J fan since at least '94 and I have to say that I really think that the live cd is the biggest let down in all that time. Of course, the Joy Division cover on the first cd is right up there. Why did he just do a straightforward cover of this track???? Back in highschool/college, would a manic, total freak out rendition of 'Love Will Tear Us Apart' have not really just hit the spot, really been the perfect song to listen to during those seemingly all important emotional breakdowns? I know I would have loved it (but then, I was one of the emotional confused crowd) ** While writing this, saw another mail address the JD cover come in. I don't think a fucked up version, manic and full of emotion, would have to be considered a pisstake. I love JD, but damn, I would love to hear someone seriously mess with this great track. Does it mean that all the emotion has to go away. Hell no, its just expressed it another way. Anyways, maybe Tom J is just getting older, more mature in that regard. I can attest to the Vodka and twiddling (no bass). I saw him at the Cochella Music festival last year and I was utterly disappointed. He did kill off a whole fifth of Absolute is 45 minutes, and his facial hair was interesting. That boy needs to go on a diet, though. Woooo!!!!!

yes i was actually there... i never said he only played stuff from the new ones, but all he really seemed to do with them was feed the cd's or dat's or whatever into some dsp fuckery (i could be wrong here, but it would certainly have been possible for him to have done this coz it would have sounded the same).... the crowd didn't seem to think much of it either, loads of people about to get excited then nothing... it's funny the way he abuses the audience though. the other time I saw him at glasto (4/5 years ago now) he played a much much better set, mostly improvised jungle/hardcore acid shit with andy jenkinson helping out (it was in the avalon field IIRC).... skism...

With regards to the DSP thing that I mentioned earlier in this thread... I read about it in some magazine (could've been Keyboard) interview about a year ago where he mentioned about how his current shows were pretty much DATs being fed through a DSP box or two. This was in reference to the shows he did that were mostly Go Plastic stuff so I can't speak for glasto or whatever. He also spoke profusely about the mindfuck or headfuck (i forget which) that was the crux of his music. Perhaps his new piece of verbose writing that accompanies the new album is his way of expounding on the mysterious headfuck that guides his inspiration. Even if he released a crappy live CD and has recently been doing disappointing shows, Tom Jenkinson still rules the school.
