this past january a friend gave me a burned copy of an album called "iii" (as in "three") by the idm group "download". the album's probably about 40 minutes long-mostly ambient with some drums, and a really organic sample of a woman's voice at one point repeating "who was i?" as it receeds out of hearing i heard one guy from skinny puppy was in the group-and that the name of the group and the album were designed so that the tracks could not be easily acquired over p2p networks-but my friend presented the whole thing on a cdr to me as some kind of achievement. anyone know anything about this group, who they are, etc etc? i think they are from north america thanks ===== http://www.paralexia.net __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yeah, it's cevin key's side project. 3 albums, sort of industrially and tending more towards IDM as they progressed. They're not really an IDM group, per se, and the album you're speaking of is actually quite old. A quick search on amazon.com shows the other albums and the release date for iii is 1997 -- hardly anything "tech" enough to warrant anything difficult for copiers. Not to mention the lack of p2p networks back then.... It may be difficult to get over p2p networks because it's 5 yrs old, though... Anyway, basically a more electronicy industrial side project for some skinny puppy people with Mark Spybey on the first two albums. I found iii a little lacking, personally, as it attempted to be "idm" and ended up being cheese. However, they really had a good thing going on the album "the eyes of stanley pain." Grindy, noisey, and very solid, with spybey doing some wonderful whispery screamy lyrics that blend with the music SO well. Genesis P. Orridge is on it in a few spots, but meh, skip those tracks. That and the "sidewinder" EP which accompanies it are probably an example of some of the best industrial-IDM stuff around, without being too cliche or boring (like most industrial music). I normally hate industrial music because it's basically the same 3 bands that just spin off side projects, but download's middle album there is quality. Furnace is good but a little too "loose" for most tastes, and iii and later are weak IMO. derek ------- eggytoast.com ------- with lather thingy --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

"later"? What are you referring to? I agree with most of what you wrote. (A nuance, maybe...: I really hated "iii" when I first got it. But on further listening sessions, I had to admit that I found redeeming qualities to parts of the album. Especially a track whose title involves electric insects or something of that ilk. It's been a while...) I'd just like to add a good word for "Charlie's Family" (a soundtrack album), which I think is really good. I think it was done before "iii". Apparently the film it's associated with is pretty weak (I haven't seen it), but I swear the music is very fine. In the same vein as "The Eyes...", but even better IMO. I haven't listened to the singles nor "plateau" (I think that's another project, though... How does that one sound?) g. -- Guillaume Grenier - gollum@videotron.ca in space there is no north in space there is no south in space there is no east in space there is no west --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

"Effector," I would assume.

"Charlie's Family" was recorded sometime around the same time as "Furnace." There was a recent release of the full version of "Puppy Gristle" (released as a Skinny Puppy CD ironically), which includes much of the uneditted "Charlie's Family" tracks.

It's a trashy horror film, just depends on whether or not you like that sort of thing. I don't think it's officially been released, though, only screened a couple times.

platEAU basically sounds like "III" does. "Music for Grassbars" is the name of the album if that gives you any ideas. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

There have been 3 albums since then - Effector, Inception, and III Steps Forward.

Plateau is really good...its Phil Western's project with Key helping out. I think just about every track is named after some super high-potent strain of marijuana, if that tells you where they are coming from :) Also I highly recommend Phil Western's last solo album 'Dark Features' -- ^-^-^-^-^-^-^-^-^-^-^-^-^-^-^- omz beautamous loaf recordings http://www.hotweird.com/loaf/ --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Have you heard the new release 'III Steps Forward'? Possibly the best thing they have done yet. Download is the post-Skinny Puppy project of cEvin Key. They have several albums and ep's out all of which are absolutely excellent IMO. I don't know what he is talking about about the p2p stuff...they are regular audio cd's just like everything else...no harder to get than any other cd. more info here: http://www.subconsciousstudios.com/ they are from Canada. -- ^-^-^-^-^-^-^-^-^-^-^-^-^-^-^- omz beautamous loaf recordings http://www.hotweird.com/loaf/ --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I see several posts about this already, but Download has to be the most underrated electronica groups out there, so I feel the need to expound on its greatness. The incarnation of Download was a Skinny Puppy track on Last Rights called, appropriately enough, "Download." In 1995 cEvin and philth (phil western) teamed up with Mark Spybey (Dead Voices on Air, which is a hell of a lot closer to 'ambient with some drums' than Download is) to be the central elements of Download, including lots of guests like Genesis P'Orridge (*shudder*... it's rumored that the only reason he gets to stick around is that he has all the drugs) and Ohgr, etc. The early Download sound was really nothing like III, it grew more out of the Skinny Puppy sound. But with the influence of ambient folks like philth and spybey, it turned into the awesome force it is now. If you like III, pick up Effector and DO NOT i repeat DO NOT miss out on part 3 of Subconscious Studios "From the Vault..." series called III Steps Forward. It is unquestionably my favorite one so far; there are only 1000 copies and I have #702, so they're bound to be gone soon. A lot of SP fans got turned off of Download when III came out precisely because it has somewhat of a softer edge than the previous ones (have a listen to Charlie's Family or Furnace or The Eyes of Stanley Pain and you'll see what I'm talking about). Also, it's likely that you'll dig the more techno project of cEvin's as well, called Plateau. Music From Grass Bars is awesome, and they will be #4 in the From the Vault series... if III Steps Forward is any indication of the quality of this series, the new Plateau promises to be hella cool. Unfortunately, III Steps Forward was philth's last work with cEvin on Download (apparently). Well, cEvin released another solo album called "The Ghost in Each Room" or something like that. It's okay, but not that great. Then again, I have a similar opinion of "Music for Cats". The two don't really sound that alike though. "The Ghosts. . ." sounds kinda like effector by Download, i guess, although it can get kinda rockish sometimes. poor description ive written. :)

Download is his main project. I think his solo albums are "these songs don't fit in to any of my other projects" type affairs. As for download being bad/good, "Furnace" and "The Eyes of Stanely Pain" fuck my shit right up. Just lots of crazy, random, sometimes noisy, sometimes dancey bits. For those with a short attention span. Later work is smother, with more DM, but less I. ebola np: botch

The second album, from what I've read, sounded like it was written to be a solo album. Like he sat down and said, "I'm making an album!" wholely apart from his work with Philth, Anthony Valcic and the rest of those Subconscious fellows. "Music For Cats," though, was definitely mostly outtakes from other things-- about a quarter of the songs were from Download's original demo tape (hence the "guest appearances" by GPO and Dwayne). --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Hey, I quite like "The Ghost of Each Room"- I think parts of it are very IDM. The rest is sort of an eclectic mix. The songs with Edward Ka-spel on vocals are funny. I like all of the Download albums, but "III" is amazing. "Eyes of Stanley Pain" and "Furnace" have a little more of a dark/industrial feel (although I wouldn't exactly classify Download as "industrial") - still great stuff. "Effector" is kind of electronic jam music, for lack of a better description. And "Charlie's Family" is the most avant-guard, eerie, etc. of the bunch. Someone I think compared it to Coil. Interesting. I got a different impression because of the way in which there are a few collaborators, principally the LPD's frontman whose name is escaping me, and Ogre, who vary from track to track. Also, "The Ghosts. . ." includes a track that was made for a sonic the hedgehog game on the dreamcast a few yrs. ago. ebola np: venetian snares _________________________________________________________________ Chat with friends online, try MSN Messenger: http://messenger.msn.com --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
