or not. Kool Keith doesn't have anything to do with Deltron 3030. The link tying both projects together is Dan the Automator. I always thought the Deltron 3030 project was a lame attempt to recreate the magic of the Dr. Octagon album. ~g -- Greg Smith http://www.laiad.com "I don't trust anybody¹s nostalgia but my own. Kool Keith can do no wrong...also check out 'Black Elvis', 'Mathew' and his work with DJ Spooky on 'Riddim Warfare' if you like 'Dr. Octagon.' Kool Keith is an innovator, no doubt. What other MC can you say can come from as many different angles and personas as him? Besides, the old Ultramagnetic MC's work is some of the best hip-hop ever (IMO). Also... See, the thing I always come back to with Kool Keith is that he hooks up with some great producers, but as a lyricist, he's just kinda boring. His lyrics are funny the first time you hear them, but have no staying power (to me) and I get bored of them quickly. It's like laughing at the schizophrenics on the street. In fact, it's not really any different, since he is/was schizophrenic, is it? Really, I just don't understand why Kool Keith gets all this hype. He just doesn't seem that talented to me. I dunno.

In my eyes, Keith has done a lot of wrong -- or at least, plenty of mediocre. Of course, he's put out a lot too, so he gets a *little* credit. He's got a new one coming soon too: KHM, with H Bomb and Marc Live. Here's some of my recent hip-hop faves (most of em with reviews up at http://www.allmusic.com): DSP - In the Red (Ninja Tune) --> excellent. DJ Jazzy Jeff - The Magnificent --> very mainstream (compared to most) but pretty solid in ATCQ vein. Dan the Automator - Wanna Buy a Monkey? --> solid mix album blah-blah-blah Dilated Peoples - Expansion Team --> great one from last year.

I can see your points regarding Kool Keith, but I suppose I admire his ingenuity in that his style is different with each and every album...he goes from hard-ass ghetto thug (Mathew) to a completely abstract theme of a different variation (Dr. Dooom, for example) with ease, and his lyrics are nice and abstract with some witty punchlines. I guess I like him because there is nobody in hip-hop doing what he does. He might be the first and only MC to do theme albums (at least that I can think of off the top of my head). As for Swollen Members, different than Blackalicious, yes, but similar in that the content has more to say than how many hoes they busted a nut in or how many keys they sling on the block... JS

Black Elvis is imho one of the greatest hip hop albums EVER !!! His other stuff pales in comparison to this one - he seems to be going for quantity instead of quality a lot of times. dave -----Original Message----- From: Jason Stickel [mailto:j_stickel_otfp@hotmail.com] Sent: Wednesday, July 10, 2002 7:38 AM To: idm@cocksalad.com; idm@hyperreal.org Subject: Re: [idm] Re: HipHop I can see your points regarding Kool Keith, but I suppose I admire his ingenuity in that his style is different with each and every album...he goes from hard-ass ghetto thug (Mathew) to a completely abstract theme of a different variation (Dr. Dooom, for example) with ease, and his lyrics are nice and abstract with some witty punchlines. I'm not sure about this one. I thought it was decent, but didn't compare to their debut. Evidence was rather weak on the album, but babu still held it strong. Just Keith's work with the Ultramagnetic MC's is worth all of his praise. Plus his done alot to advance the world of the hip hop. Although he may not be as fresh and innovative as some of the guys coming out today, he's still a big figure. Without him, alot of these guys wouldn't be able to do what they do. josh NXO --- "when all soldiers lay their weapons down, or when all kings and queens relinquish their crowns, there will be sorrow no more." --Bad Religion
