I thought that I remembered some discussion and review of Massive Attack on this list -- checked the reviews via gopher and did not find any. I'm seeing some used and discounted copies in my vairous music haunts... I like the Unfinished Sympathy from Sliver Soundtrack. I notice that Shara Nelson (the singer on U.. Symp...) has her own solo CD out, is she on all tracks on the Massive Attack album? Thanks in advance, and if I should go to another list on this, let me know. steve

It's very definitely worth a purchase at used costs, if only because all of those great singles are present (Unfinished Sympathy, Daydreaming, Safe From Harm.)

Well, I spent $25 on it as an import, and am still glad that I did (it came out months later domestically; besides, the artwork is better). Although I was a little underwhelmed at first, the more I listened to it, the more it amazed me. The bass line from Safe from harm is *incredible*. The singles are great. There's only one song I'm not too keen on (One Love). I absolutely love it. It reminds me of a downbeat version of Soul II Soul (some of them used to be in a group w/ Nellee Hooper). They're from Bristol, England (home of Mark Stewart, Gary Clail, Smith & Mighty, and Reborn). Shara Nelson is on 4 cuts, doing a good job on all. I've heard that her album is kind of dodgy. It's a shame. She's been around for years (mostly Adrian Sherwood stuff). In a similar vein, check out the Aftermath single from Tricky (aka Tricky Kid), who is on Blue Lines. Pretty similar, but not as smooth, kind of chunky & weird, but very cool. TK

I just got it here in the Netherlands and i must say it's probably just as good as their previous album, 'Blue Lines'. If you like this dubby hip hop soul, try to get Portishead's 'Dummy' album on Go! Beat (UK)......... Does anyone out there agree with me that "Protection" by Massive Attack is an Intelligent Dance masterpiece? The title track alone is a beautiful example of how electronic music can be moving and emotionally resonant. Even the more hiphop influenced tracks are brilliantly evocative and atmospheric. I would also like to recommend, just as an experimental oddity from the past, the 1980 solo album by Andy Partridge of XTC. There are some remarkably ahead-of-their-time tracks on this LP. It may not necessarily be dance music, but some of it definitely qualifies as excellent electronic listening music. I believe it is available as a CD reissue titled "Explode Together - The Dub Experiments" and is credited to XTC.

Although I haven't seen it, I would suspect that "Explode Together - The Dub Experiments" would be more likely to contain the XTC stuff like "Go+" (an extra 12" that came with early copies of "Go 2") and the various random B-side tracks that made up the "Homo Safari" series, rather than contain Andy's solo LP "Take Away/The Lure of Salvage". I could be mistaken, though ... (That said, I'll second JJ's recommendation that they were ahead-of-their-time tracks. I have all of them ... ) - Greg

You are both correct. I don't have the CD with me to prove it, but I do remember selling my vinyl copy of that Andy Partridge album because the Dub Experiments album had that plus Go+ plus some other stuff. Brian OnNow: Electro Harmonix (Tetsu Inoue & Jonah Sharp on Fax)

I bought the 12" "I against I" and it is absolutely off the hook. I wasn't into the last album very much so this was a very pleasant surprise. Mos Def is on it and while that could have been bad and somewhat boring it turn out really good. It's a bassy, thumpin, evil sounding track. adesh http://www.recordcamp.com -----Original Message----- From: Irene McC [mailto:substar@iafrica.com] Sent: Sunday, June 09, 2002 5:43 AM To: idm@hyperreal.org Subject: [idm] massive attack Has anybody heard the new Massive Attack?
