This is (or was) a reference tone, back in the day when separates hifi was
the only way to go... (it still is). I remember a kraftwerk tape (electric
cafe) which had a synth tone played in octaves. These tones are to check
the sound levels, balance and general quality of your playback equipment
before hearing the music in question. You can buy commercial CD's from
places like Studiospares full if variations of these reference tones, all
designed to test various levels of hifi and p.a. systems. FM synths are
good at recreating similar sinewave rising tones.

| Hey,
| Can anyone tell me what the rising tone at the beginning and end of
cassette
| tapes was for? I was listening to some old tapes and wondered. Also--any
| programs or suggestions on how to make the tone?
|
| cheers
