so i seem to keep buying more and more electro & synth pop lately. i'd like some recommendations on where to go from here. i just picked up 2/3 of the new Disco Nouveau comp on Ghostly International. (apparently the third record was short pressed or something?) anyway, i just love this comp. in particular, the tracks by legowelt, solvent, daniel wang, ectomorph and lowfish are just amazing. i like the production on the dmx krew track, but i'm not a big fan of the vocals there. and the solvent track, my goodness, easily in the running for the best track he's ever done. i remember reading an interview with him a few months ago, on igloomag i think, where he mentioned he had a track with full on vocals coming out on a compilation. i was a bit sceptical to say the least. too much good music is ruined by people feeling the need to add vocals. umm, well, i was utterly wrong. the vocals are nicely effected, and seemlessly blended with the track. and the lyrics themselves are just cool. basically solvent singing a eulogy to the radio of his youth. perhaps that sounds ridiculous? it works perfectly. this is pretty much as soulful as it gets. and is lowfish always this good? his track on the disco comp is stunning, i love "the accident causer," and, as much as i love solvent, the lowfish remix on sovlent city is easily my favorite track on the album. i also recently picked up soviet's "we are eyes, we are builders" and i've been listening to it quite a bit. the vocals are dead on depeche mode with nice production - drum machines, synths, occasionally some guitar. it's a damn good album. definitely very retro-y though. (perhaps that goes without saying for synth pop?) other stuff i like: both releases on device entertainment recordings (gique & carl a finlow) the datathief 12" on Orange (though, except for the last track, i think it's a little harder than what i'd like to spin) le syndicate electronique - dissidence (invasion planete) (i like the slightly industrial feel of this record) stuff i'm ambivalent about: skanfrom - hand picked fragments anthony rother presents electro commando 1 welcome to psicity stuff i don't really like: adult - entertainment adult - hand to phone remixes (but i think i only listened to this record one, perhaps another listen is in order?) i'm probably forgetting some other records i own, but you get the idea. so, if you basically thought solvent was the best synth pop out there, where, besides suction, would you look for synthpop? and as far as electro goes, it seems i probably like it a little on the smooth and poppy side. any thoughts? i want my robot disco! thanks for any recommendations. - d

well, i personally am a fan of the whole ersatz audio/adult sound, although it seems as though you're shying from the more aggressive/robotic side and leaning on the more synth-pop side. i too thought was pretty indifferent on the skanfrom release, not really too into it. you probably won't get much out of the miss kitten collaborations, esp the hacker, if you aren't into adult, although i prefer the hacker's style over ersatz in general. you might, however, check out the "rippin kittin" 12" from golden boy and miss kittin, or even possibly the full length "or" which deviates from the new wave revival and opts more for straight-ahead italo-disco stuff. some other items i've picked up that i highly recommend: waldorf "you're my disco" (a touch of class usa) very very cheesy but totally fun. worth it for the cover photograph alone... a lot of other things on this american label are equally ridiculous and worth looking into. not to be confused with the far less ridiculous (and more credible) german label of the same name.... legowelt "wirtschaftswunder" (bunker) really great italo stuff. much better than the "pimpshifter" 12" which, although not bad, left me wanting something more antonelli electr "me, the disco machine" (italic) my favorite schwander release, not as pop but really smooth tracks. worth it for "automatic music" and "i don't want nobody else but you"... like giorgio moroder crossed with new order, although that comparison might be too easy. mathias schaffh?user "hey little girl" (ware) really great remake of the icehouse track, with a feather-light guest vocal line. like erasure meets kompakt. northern lite "trusting blind" and "treat me better" (frauenfunk and city rockers, respectively) really nice mix of new wave and contemporary sounds, vocals and all toktok vs. soffy-o "missy queen's gonna die" (bpitch control) essential!!! get the 10" first, then if you want more pick up the 12" of remixes which, although not as good as the original, are still worth it little computer people "electro pop" (psi49net) if you didn't like the track on the a.rother electro commando comp, you might not like this, but i think it's stellar! catnip "word to the bird" (stilleben) hear it and believe that this was made in 2001 and not 1985, haha. collaboration between legowelt and luke eargoggle, need i say more? smash tv "electrified" (bpitch control) this has gotten mixed reviews on the list but i personally love it. yes, the vocals are cheesy (and new wave wasn't?), the sounds are decimated to hell, it sounds like an atari locked inside a mirrorball, bit a lot funkier. i highly highly recommend this release. if you are looking for a taste without getting the full length, the "I love you now" 12" that preceded it is great (3 tracks of the 4 are on the full length, though) linda lamb "hot room" (gigolo) this is pretty good, lightweight vocal pop on the gigolo label... on a side note, i've been really hooked on David Carretta lately, starting first with his ubiquitous "Vicious Game" single (on the Domination 12") and then backtracking to his Gigolo full length (Le Catalogue Electronique) and some of his harder Thrust releases. If anyone has not checked out the Domination 12" but is into the whole Gigolo schtick, I highly recommend doing so, right away. also, the Electronicat release on Angelika Koehlermann is top notch, very dirty, coked-up studio craziness. Think 808s, guitars, feedback, vocals that meander between English and French.... and you've scratched the surface. i just ordered the new CD by Travelogue on Plastiq Musiq which sounds pretty good. very 80s new wave influenced stuff..... also the new 12" by creme de menthe called "plastique" looks to be great. anyway, hope this mishmash of namedropping helps... matt

have you picked up the electroclash compilation? some tracks are pretty abrasive, but you'd like the fischerspooner track; they have a full-length which allmusic says is excellent. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

The "full-length" has a running time of barely over 41 minutes (spread over 9 tracks). It bursts with happy energy, although nothing quite tops the excellent single "Emerge", imo. All tracks are well crafted, infectuously "up" and floor-happy. Definitely NOT an album to slash your wrists by ;-) Also, you may want to check out Dave Clarke's "World Service" double CD compilation (which also includes Emerge), as well as Anthony Rother, Adult, GD Luxxe, James Ruskin, Jeff Mills, Midfield General, etc. One that I'm enjoying greatly in that electro-vein is Golden Boy's "Or" (with Miss Kittin featured in places). It's on Emperor Norton.
