Does anyone know if anything of that sort actually happens? Has anyone actually been approached by a lawyer, etc? I'd be scared to death if I were someone like him. I know that tb6 ain't exactly WB records, but if the RIAA is getting its feathers all ruffled over someone buring a fucking cd for their friend, wouldn't it stand to reason that this sort of thing can only go on for so long? tb6 seems to be the most popular label that does this sort of thing to a high degree. Literally hundreds of bootleg remixes of popular songs come out every year. Big record labels won't go after small operators unless there's significant money involved; if they press 2000 copies of the Missy Elliot remix, the profit on it (no more than $3000 tops) would only pay for a couple of hours of lawyering. Keep in mind that the maximum penalty for use without permission is the profit on the release and destroying any unsold stock. Since it's an overseas release they can't even sue in US courts. Copyright law is pretty much an international affair these days. I don't know how true that last statement is anymore. Think about the Skylarov case brought by Adobe last summer. Software developed by Russians in Russia. Court case in California. -- jeremy avnet / brainsik .:. while what he's doing is illegal, kid 606's records will never be bought instead of missy elliot's. they don't file them in the missy section, most missy fans don't know they exist... this goes for the other artists on the new album too. pursuing something like this would only make a record label look like the bad guy (more than they already do), so my guess would be then nothing at all will happen. i'm sure record industry people (at least some of them!) probably listen to kid 606, and freakbitchlickfly went off without a hitch, as have all the $$$ 7"s. gregory

1) he won't go to jail because the label is responsible for copyright infractions 2) it's not on tb6, it's on Violent Turd, which is run out of New Zealand. I don't know anything about NZ copyright law, but i bet it would be a huge hassle to try to litigate 3) the RIAA doesn't care about sampling and illicit remixes, that would be the domain of the publisher of the original work 4) rumor has it that Missy Elliot likes this stuff 5) the buggles are defunct :) 6) the production run is small enough and low-key enough it will probably slip by unnoticed just like the last batch of tb6 missy remixes -- String Theory -- http://www.enteract.com/~yoshi/index.cgi -- String Theory's Anhedonia CD/LP available at finer music stores worldwide --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

that happened because the skylarov kid came to the usa and was arrested. the biggest difference is that skylarov violated US criminal codes by reverse engineering an encryption algorithm, which is a big time no no (a totally asinine law, and totally outside the scope of this list). the worst thing that could happen in this case is that violent turd will declare bankruptcy after being sued in a us civil case. unauthorized sampling/bootlegging is not a criminal act. besides, somehow i doubt that violent turd records inc. does much more than act as an offshore legal shield for miguel and co. for exactly this reason. -- String Theory -- http://www.enteract.com/~yoshi/index.cgi -- String Theory's Anhedonia CD/LP available at finer music stores worldwide --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

1. He violated the U.S. law when he was in Russia, not when he was in the U.S. 2. "Stealing" music is also a violation against U.S. law. I don't believe Violent Turd will be attacked. My point is to make people aware of how far copyright law is being taken now. Particularly in an international sense. -- jeremy avnet / brainsik .:. http://www.theory.org/~brainsik/pubkey.asc --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
