Mira Calix Neotropic/Small Fish With Spine Andrea Parker Cibo Matto (Yuka Honda&Miho Hatori) Add to that: Delia Derbyshire (BBC Radiophonic Workshop genius who brought to life the original Dr. Who theme. She sadly passed away last year. Here's her obit: http://www.guardian.co.uk/obituaries/story/0,3604,518008,00.html) Clara Rockmore, theremin virtuoso Bebe Barron, was co composer with her husband Louis on the groundbreaking "Forbidden Planet" soundtrack back 1956 And in the academic spectrum: Laurie Spiegel has been hacking away since the early 70s. Check out here recent compilation: Obsolete Systems http://www.forcedexposure.com/artists/spiegel.laurie.html Alice Shields started doing stuff as part of the Columbia-Princeton Electronic Music Center back in the early 70s as well. Maryanne Amacher who's done mostly sound installation stuff http://www.forcedexposure.com/artists/amacher.maryanne.html and I'm probably forgetting a lot more. Perhaps I'm missing something here. Granted it is rather contradictory of me to be on a mailing list after what I'm about to say, but I often make great distinctions between the music and many topics that make it to the board. The list is very helpful in getting a feel for the music, and a great place to discuss the music, but I've always felt that this genre as ultimately rather introverted. In that, I mean that the music produced is most often far too involved to try and "get" anything more than, well, music out of it. The most obvious example of this: the lack of words in idm. This is a field concerned with sound, not message as far as I'm can tell. Obviously the music is what attracts me, but a great side benefit is the absence of a direct message. This music is almost entirely subjective in every respect. Again, this is *not* a trend I notice on the discussion board, but in the music itself. I certainly do not want to criticize anyone if they feel something concerning gender when listening to a certain piece (though I probably would not understand how such specific topics would arise from this sort of music), but to be so direct as to consider the sex of the artist up front seems a bit odd to me. If I wanted to understand or explore a cultural divide [ethnic, political, gender] I'll listen to punk rock or - god forbid - talk radio. But trying bring attention to such idm just seems a bit silly. The last thing on my mind when I put dat politics in my disc player is "I wonder which beep the woman member was making..." Remember the BOC is gay string that wouldn't die? I see this discussion about as meaningful. They both end up at the same place: who cares? Either you like someone's music or you don't. If the sex of the creator is something anybody needs to consider when judging a work, perhaps they are missing the point. I try to place myself in a social environment where gender, race and sex are not considered unless involving something *directly* related to gender, race or sex. In a situation where women are held back by men, in whatever way, clearly the term "male dominated" ought to be applied. But if two girls walked into a coffee shop and, after noticing that there happen to be twice as many men as women there, one mentions "hey, this place seems rather 'male dominated', call your sister and her friends" that would seem a bit absurd. I still haven't found a cock-rock counterpart in idm [thinking of you, Donna S. ;) ] so what gives? It any of this really necessary? There was a new group created for female idm'rs, so I suppose it is necessary. I just wish I could understand why. Or maybe I'm just missing the point. No disrespect all around, and thanks for reading. Brandon __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! Agree! Last night, for example, as Freiband was playing his second piece, someone who was there to try to understand, appreciate, learn more, hear more of idmesque music commented that what was this supposed to mean....if music was about feeling something, what was there to feel in this particular work for example? I stood there for a bit longer, listening...I was actually really enjoying this track a lot, and feeling something...so I said to them that, yes, indeed I did feel something from his music, and this particular thing...it brought back strong memories from the time I was an Intensive Care Nurse and had to suction patients breathing tubes all night, and this was remineicent of that sound, mixed with the sound of the ventilators, etc... Speaking of last night, it was good...nice size crowd at Tritone - a very artist friendley enviornment (they had the Sun Ra Arkestra there recently :) The event was on a Monday casue that was the only day all these guys could be there. Erin Anderson (she also goes by Fidget and is one half of Flowchart) opened up Dj'g...perfect...she set the right mood for the night and had a nice long set to really explore and create a picture...lots of mad, deep insane carnival sounds with a healthy dose of My Bloody Valentine. She also played between the live sets. Howard Stelzer/Jason Talbot Duo were up first - crazy fun lovin guys with lots of silly tricks up thier sleeves...playing with sounds created with the 1200 and attching various devices and so forth...scratching, etc...1 guy in the audience got inspired to do a modern jazz acrobatic intrepretive dance/ birthday tribute to his friend who he was with celebrating. Freiband was fantastic. Serious, with his cardigan & cigar, he sat in front of his laptop and pecked away, looking like he was writing the great American novel as someone pointed out to me. I loved all his stuff, looking around the room, it seemed everyone really was quite into it. Goem was the Freiband guy and 2 others...all three lined up in front of thier laptops. good work, lots of complicated layers and subtle movements...best was the last track where a circling, cycling, ever growing in intensity and volume, then suddenly vanished. Thanks to the fine people from Zenapolae and Fuzzy Box :) ok then, Linda --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
