That's only one option. "Art for art's sake" is just the idea that art doesn't need to have any function (eg. celebrating God's creation, revealing beauty, providing satire, etc.). Re: commerce, someone in the 60s (sorry, that's a really helpful reference ;) pointed out that one of the selling points of art (as commerce) is that it pushes the boundaries of what is acceptable as art. For that very reason it can never actually exist outside the art market. Which is not the same in any way as making art for the sake of commerce, but just an interesting sideline. Michael np.
