I honestly don't get too upset about music spam(unless it comes with attachments :( ) but I'm BOMBARED with multi-level marketing schemes, offers for credit cards and letters from leaders of third world countries wanted to drop money into my acccount. One thing that comes in handy, is to create a forwarding e-mail address or alias and use that for all your lists. In your e-mail program, set the filters to something "if To: contains <your list address> and Subject: does not contain [list_identifier], delete the message" - usually works for me, but, as most people, I am subscribed to the idm list with my regular e-mail address, so filtering out anything that doesn't have [idm] in the subject would not be smart :-) In other words, have any of you received *postal* spam from a "company" calling themselves Millenium Finance Limited, or something like that? Posted in France, fax number in the UK, reply address in the Netherlands... I knew I would regret signing up for those get-paid-to-surf thingies. Oh well, at least I made a nice buck there - but now they are too, selling all of my data... Sorry for the off-topic ranting, and have a nice day! --Jan! This is a known spammer that scans regular websites, looks for addresses left on these pages (like in guestbook entries, forum discussions, *anything*), and sends them an e-mail as if they are the webmaster's address. Had it happen to me after I wrote a review published on the site of a large telecom operator in Belgium - but I don't see myself as their webmaster. Assholes.

or -> Good reason to set up spam assassin... http://spamassassin.taint.org/ I haven't set it up yet, but i've had a few friends recommending it, who now look forward to spam to see what rating level it gets. A quote from the README: 'SpamAssassin is a mail filter which attempts to identify spam using text analysis and several internet-based realtime blacklists. Using its rule base, it uses a wide range of heuristic tests on mail headers and body text to identify "spam", also known as unsolicited commercial email. Once identified, the mail can then be optionally tagged as spam for later filtering using the user's own mail user-agent application. In its most recent test, SpamAssassin differentiated between spam and non-spam mail correctly in 99.94% of cases. Since then, it's just been getting better and better!' i'll report back once i set it up... -thor --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Yeah, I seem to get a lot of spam from these Chicago clubs. The spam is sent to idm-list@staticbeats.com an address that I obviously set up to curtail such activities. I get spam sent to addresses I used for the ambient list as well as addresses I used to use for the IDM List. It's a shame really, to send people so much crap they aren't interested in. Why in the world would a club want to spam you ? They aren't selling you anything, they just want to let you know what events are happening. So if you "unsubscribe" shouldn't this be an indication you're not interested? What a nuisance. I've definitely learned a lot about how spam gets my way though. Any and every time I enter my email address on the net I use the form websitename@staticbeats.com for instance, I'd say markdotcomguestbook@staticbeats.com if I signed Mark's guestbook. Then, wouldn't you know it but I get a ton of mail sent to that address within days. So I just block the address with procmail and all is good in the world. So yes, it's all about procmail.... too bad I can't seem to properly get it working with my web host. Think I'll try running a mail server at home.... The fun thing about http://spamcop.net/ is getting those replies back which say the spammer had been booted. Spamcop used to have a free service (as well as a pay one) - dunno if that's still the case as I liked it well enough to subscribe long ago,. Although I don't have them screen my email, I just paste the full headers in (and the source code if it contains html), click a button and they parse it and prepare separate spam reports to all of the pertinent addresses. All the work of sorting through the fake addresses and parsing the headers is done for you - and (depending on your connection, etc.) it takes about 5 seconds. jeff At 09:35 PM 3/18/2002, lysaabi wrote:
