hello, does anyone know if there are variants of the mp3 codec ..... meaning, if i am ftping some mp3s onto my machine, and they are unreadable, is it a typical problem that mp3s are unreadable crossplatform? i've never run into it before... i am working on a powermac, and all mp3s downloaded using fetch appear as quicktime mp3 files, but are unreadable by any mp3 player. is there a fix for this? matt -------------- matthewd.mercer ********** mmercer@kent.edu http://www.personal.kent.edu/~mmercer/ http://www.mp3.com/systm ++++++++ "and one must _never_ put the tourniquet around the neck, no matter how bad the nosebleed is...." --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

it's probably an encoding issue. make sure when you download files with Fetch (which sucks BTW, use Transmit or NetFinder) you download them as RAW BINARY files, not MacBinary, BinHex, etc....

encoding issue? I mean to clarify that. The MP3 encoding is not the problem, it's the binary encoding (binhex, macbinary, etc) that Fetch is either not decoding or decoding when it's not supposed to....again, use RAW BINARY transfers....

If you want to make sure this doesn't happen anymore... use transmit instead of Fetch... It's more basic but it won't fail you... Besides you could use Uncook (I'm not sure it would work in this case though), but I don't think it was ever released for Mac... :-/ Personally, i've had the same problem a few years ago and I unfortunately never managed to make these files work either... :-/ Sorry. Is that a trick question? Solution: you scrap Media Player and use either Sonique or WinAmp, as Media Player is dumb as a brick when it comes to variable bit rate MP3s...
