So I just picked up the most recent Flanger CD on Ninja Tune ("Inner Space/Outer Space") and I really dig it. I'm not a huge jazz fan (save for Afro-Cuban jazz), but I like the electronic elements that spice up what could have potentially been a straight-up improv jazz CD. So my question is has Burnt (Bernd) Friedman done any other projects that sounds like Flanger? Also, I'd like to hear people's thought about this Flanger disc compared to the previous two. Thanks in advance. -djgyn, forever ===== ======= "GASR" -(Accession recording artists)- << http://gasr.net >> (updated November 2001) << http://www.accession-records.de >> __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Definitely check out Burnt Friedman's "Con Ritmo." Fantastic stuff and very much in the same style as "Inner Space/Outer Space." Personally, I find the first 2 Flanger albums to be a bit dull. This new work is certainly their best so far. --- djgyn forever <djgyn@yahoo.com> wrote:

Yes, I'd agree with that. Flanger = Bernd Friedman with Atom Heart. If you like that Latin flavour, try Senor Coconut (Atom Heart's project). As for BF, his "Plays Love Songs" is quite gorgeous. I'd also most highly recommend you check out his older aliases, such as Nonplace Urban Field and Drome. He also worked as No More Crime (?) but I've never heard anything he's done under that guise. If you can find Dromed by Drome, I'm sure you'll consider it a fruitful search (in a more ambient way). I have to disagree compleatly on that one I find the first flnger to be thier most experimental work of them all... I found the second record to be way to commercial and the 3rd one to be slightly in the middle... but its thier first effort to be the most interesting by far. pure glitch tech jazz...

I really LOVE the Geeez N Gosh album on Mille Plateaux. It was unique and fun, two qualities that are hard to come by in this ultra-serious 'glitch' subgenre. I wish Atom would do another one soon... As for Senor Coconut... I'd rather listen to my dishwasher... and my dishwasher sucks. -djgyn, foreva ===== ======= "GASR" -(Accession recording artists)- << http://gasr.net >> (updated November 2001) << http://www.accession-records.de >> __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? There is actually a new Geeez n Gosh album in the works. It will propably be out in march and it may be called "nobody knows...". As for Flanger, the first album is great, the other two are definitely not. /P ------------------ www.fatbankroll.nu ------------------ __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? I love all of them!!! Templates + Midnight Sound + Con Ritmo + Just Landed + Plays Love Songs + Inner Space/Outer Space IMHO Burnt Friedman is a musical genius - the sheer musicality/playfulness/ inventiveness of his programming/playing keeps me returning to these works and being really impatient for more. I was just listening to Plays Love Songs on the way in to work - unsettling, detailed, unique. All the best, Colin.

I saw BF play in Sydney at the Hopetoun Hotel on Sunday. He makes some great sounds, and he manages to give his beats swing with subtle variations. It sounded in some ways like a live latin percussive band; not really because of the samples but because of the dense rhythmic textures. But it wasn't a sort of derivative stylistic imitation of latin music - it was its own entity. I bought the Flanger disk, and his BF & the Nu Dub Players the next day but haven't had time to properly listen to them yet. I have a couple of his other disks, but I'm sure there is plenty more out there. Does anyone know what the story is with his seeming omnipresence in Australia and New Zealand? I can certainly understand an affection for this neck of the woods, but he's from Cologne, right? There's a new disc called Replicant Rumba Rockers, a collection of latin-slanted Atom Heart tracks that Burnt decided to edit a bit and release on Nonplace. All the songs are from various Rather Interesting releases, but altered in some way, it's a good listen i thought. Recommended! And nothin' beats out Burnt Friedman live. it's a real treat! ===== Official Tetsu Inoue Homepage, RadioShow Playlists, and Trades @: http://ww1.math.luc.edu/~njurcin . . . . . ..... . . . . . __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
