middle of the road electronic! i dont get that at all. this is one of the best progressions for electronic music ive heard in a long time, easily my pick for 2001. im thanking these guys for giving me something to listen to again. id like to hear what a top notch electronic record sounds like? youre entitled to your opinion i know, but what do you mean about hard heads? you mean people that dont want to listen to the same watered down, dsp turds floating around in the electronic music bowl these days. dont mean to bitch, just had to give my 2 cents. _________________________________________________________________ Chat with friends online, try MSN Messenger: http://messenger.msn.com --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

personally, i like the telefon album quite a bit. i can certainly understand the gripes with it though. try giving it a listen whilst doing your best to pay attention only to the melodies. if you extract those melodies from the context of interesting and highly textural programming, they are still "nice"... but would probably fall into some sort of "easy-listening/ adult-contemporary" genre. don't get me wrong, because i really do like the album, but i can also see the other viewpoints about it. i've heard people make similar gripes about boards of canada, but i do think they've got perhaps a slight bit more going on in terms of intricate programming and odd cultural references. anyway, that's my two cents worth. i like it. wish the melodic/harmonic parts were a bit more interesting. in context, however, they flow beautifully as a secondary facet to the textural work telefon do. i'm a fan. -b. ----- Original Message ----- From: "brian cannon" <briancan65@hotmail.com> To: <idm@hyperreal.org> Sent: Tuesday, January 22, 2002 12:56 PM Subject: [idm] another telefon post!!!! huh?

telefon tel aviv was also at the top of my list for 2001. the entire "easy-listening/adult-contemporary" comparison doesn't really make much sense to me, considering so many posts on this list in the past have complained about how unlistenable autechre's "confield" album is or how jamie lidell and datach'i are just noisy garbage. the irony is that it seems like so many list contributors hold boards of canada on a pedastal alongside the morr label, ulrich schnauss, arovane's "tides," hermann & kleine, etc.... and these are all equally accessible in my opinion. if the only thing that sets aside telefon tel aviv from the rest of these is the use of more electroacoustic instruments (i.e. guitar, rhodes organ, bass guitar, etc), it's hardly a logical train of thought. for example, i found the telefon album to be significantly more exciting than any of the new radiohead work (in fact, this sounds perhaps like what radiohead wished they were technically capable of, if they only knew how to use their software better). perhaps if telefon added some nonsensical repetitive vocal phrases on top it would be considered breakthrough and avant garde, who knows? don't get me wrong, i actually really like the new radiohead stuff too, but i'm just trying to make a point, and digressing from it at that ;-) i suppose if it's sheer abrasiveness you're going for, telefon would hardly be my recommendation, although i find their reaktor-sequences to have more energy and grit than some of the melodic downtempo coming out of the city centre and morr labels. i don't usually contribute to these impossible threads, but having seen so many arguments over how autechre is unlistenable past "tri repetae", it seems contradictory to slag this perfectly good album based on how accessible it is from a melodic perspective... ok, i think that's more than my 2 cents worth. bye :-)

My only complaint with TTA is their entirely uncreative use of electronics with the acoustic instrumentation. It sounds like "Richard Devine-Lite" glitch percussion with little given to song structure and mood. As far as the easy listening aspect, I have no problems. For a similar (and better, I believe) sound, check out Four Tet's Pause or Dntel's Life Is Full of Possibilites. Watch out for the latter, as it has *gasp* lyrics! -mark -----Original Message----- From: M Mercer [mailto:vletrmx@hotmail.com] Sent: Tuesday, January 22, 2002 5:05 PM To: idm@hyperreal.org Subject: Re: [idm] another telefon post!!!! huh? telefon tel aviv was also at the top of my list for 2001. the entire "easy-listening/adult-contemporary" comparison doesn't really make much sense to me, considering so many posts on this list in the past have complained about how unlistenable autechre's "confield" album is or how jamie lidell and datach'i are just noisy garbage. the irony is that it seems like so many list contributors hold boards of canada on a pedastal alongside the morr label, ulrich schnauss, arovane's "tides," hermann & kleine, etc.... and these are all equally accessible in my opinion. if the only thing that sets aside telefon tel aviv from the rest of these is the use of more electroacoustic instruments (i.e. guitar, rhodes organ, bass guitar, etc), it's hardly a logical train of thought. for example, i found the telefon album to be significantly more exciting than any of the new radiohead work (in fact, this sounds perhaps like what radiohead wished they were technically capable of, if they only knew how to use their software better). perhaps if telefon added some nonsensical repetitive vocal phrases on top it would be considered breakthrough and avant garde, who knows? don't get me wrong, i actually really like the new radiohead stuff too, but i'm just trying to make a point, and digressing from it at that ;-) i suppose if it's sheer abrasiveness you're going for, telefon would hardly be my recommendation, although i find their reaktor-sequences to have more energy and grit than some of the melodic downtempo coming out of the city centre and morr labels. i don't usually contribute to these impossible threads, but having seen so many arguments over how autechre is unlistenable past "tri repetae", it seems contradictory to slag this perfectly good album based on how accessible it is from a melodic perspective... ok, i think that's more than my 2 cents worth. bye :-) --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
