I dropped the Speedy J Somthing For Your Mind rmx on wednesday night and everyone stopped what they were doing to listen. It's really a great album :) Who's the singer on the second track who sounds like Morissey? :) On Thu, 13 Dec 2001, component wrote:

Right, absolutely...what was that last bit of tripe, Appetite for Disctruction or some shit like that? Came out in, ohmigod, April of last year. Geez...what fuckers to think they have their own lives, running a label, touring, and one of them having a kid. What wankers... If you want to bitch about anyone, bitch about Bola...that fricking album's been done since April of this year and it's not out yet (Rob Hall spun the disk on the Ae tour this summer). Remixes = money to live on and write music Albums = where you spend that money you made doing remixes What are you, new? A friend recently posted Soundscan stats on Ae's releases, which at best top out around 15,000 sales (in the US, mind you) for the duration of any one particular release. Yet they're well known for charging $3k for one single remix. Figuring that their take on each album *might* amount to a few thousand spread out over many years of sales, how do you think they afford new gear (much less the food/clothes/shelter/drugs they need to keep making music--living in England, no less)? Even granting them a 5-figure advance from Warp for being that label's bread'n'butter (questionable but likely), it's not enough to support *two* people for the entire two year period it takes for those two to crank out an album. Ten $3k remixes (along with touring receipts, licensing, etc) in one year amounts to muy burritos and rent and... How clever. Yes, it's business and personal finance. Thanks for enlightening the list. I really don't care how they live their lives, or what they put out, or how often. It's just blaringly obvious they're more interested in being businessmen makin' some money as the "breakthrough IDM remixers" using the same samples and styles instead of putting some effort into some new tracks of their own. Oh, and they're semi-enigmantic and German, which always helps. derek ------- eggytoast.com ------- snappy one-liner --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

It's "blaringly obvious" you've not read much about the boys, now isn't it? Listen much to Vice Versa? That first track is an original they've made *with* Jay-Jay Johanson--they're producing her album. And if you missed it it's kinda jazzy...which ain't "the same samples and styles" they've done before. It appears you need more enlightenment...and as for this list... There are plenty of people on this list who don't shoot their mouth off about shit for which they lack a modicum of fact. And what's the crack about being German? Some sort of ad hominem? Shall I presume your naiveté based on your email address ending in .edu? No, that would be illogical... laz --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

*her* ??? AFAIK Jay-Jay Johanson is a HE, considering he did that track "tell all the girls I'm back in town" or whatever the exact title may be (off the album Whiskey, which I've got buried somewhere, but am far too lazy to go search for in this sweaty heat).

That record is pretty damn great, I don't really care whose tracks they are, its still one of the best releases of the year for me. If you put The recent force Clip Hop compilation, the nummer drie comp and vice versa into a cd changer you get pure bliss. on a side note, has anyone picked up the peabird 12" on sellwell.de?, I'm pretty sure this is funkstorung as it seems to be a single off of appetite just released under a different alias, has a sample from that greenwood song, nice artwerk too. It really good, rather jazzy. lastly, anyone pick up the new choc industries 12", I think the artist is called Diverse. ~CF http://www.recordcamp.com --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I wouldn't bet my life on it, but I would assume that most successful electronic musicians, idm and otherwise, make most of their money playing live, touring and whatnot. Most people who run or help run a label (Funkst?rung, Ae, Phoenecia, RDJ) and have money to fund it are usually people who play live regularly. That's pretty apparent. Besides, I wouldn't bet that Funkst?rung got paid for all the tracks they remixed. I would guess some of the tracks were maybe just remixed for fun (WuTang?), and they ended up having to pay a small royalty to the respective artists. I don't know that for sure though.
