I saw a review of the new Solvent here, got it, and now I just wanted to chime in that _Solvent City_ is, indeed, ace material! ...at least if you're into the simple happyish electro/IDM scene that sort of stretches between Plone's youthfulness/Halloweenishness and the informed retrogradation of Console's dancier tracks. It's very emotional music: in some vague blissful motivational way-- but is probably the opposite of the DSPed-up-the-wazoo chinstroking IDM we all know so well. _Solvent City_ is really simplistic and melody-centric. But on the first couple listens it seems to be the best electro release I've heard in several months. A couple of the tracks, particularly the last one, sound downright BoC:In-a-Beautiful-Place-esque --with the same minimal nostalgic loops, unassuming rhythm, and delightful keyboard noodlings in the background-- although the Solvent is slightly dancier, certainly not a shortcoming here... A few of the ditties are a little boring, like most of Solvent's past tracks, IMO. But there's some real gems on here, like the first track. If you have a problem with uplifting, accessible music, then stay away from this. But I would say for electro heads it's a must (although it is more on the downtempo "listening" side of things than most electro singles). --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Solvent: Solvent City is probably the best electro CD since Bochum Welt - Module 2, IMO. Most definitely tops my list for 2001. Other things I just cant stop listening to lately: Abfahrt Hinwil - Programm 2 - 7" and Logatech - 10" - awesome, awesome stuff. intricate, melodic. prefuse73 - vocal studies and uprock narratives - fantastic hip-hop/electronic crossover; takes stuff like East Flatbush Project and Push Button Objects to a new level. the strokes - is this it? - not electronic, but the best rock album this year. take care shane --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Yeah, the new Solvent's pretty great, as usual. I'm not sure I like it as much as "Solvently One Listens", but it's still great. I love that shit. Speaking of retro electro/synth pop, I can't stop listening to that Styrofoam track on the "Cashier Escape Route" comp. Fucking awesome. Andrei On Fri, 26 Oct 2001, Shane Beers wrote:

That new Hotel Stadt Berlin comp has some really nice German synth pop tracks as well, mostly the a.d.s.r. tracks, Skanfrom, b.i., and h.j.pfirsisch. Anyone know when the Christian Kleine album is due? also listening to the Men With Boxes comp. SO many stand out tracks. I'm really diggin the Eaven track. Anyone have info on this guy? --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

So i only had enough money for one purchase, and it was a choice between Solvent and Lali Puna. i opted for the Solvent, which is awesome, but i'd like to hear how the Lali Puna is as well. Anyone have it, have feedback? -thor --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

People will tell you that Lali Puna is heavily influenced by Stereolab. This is somewhat true, but Lali Puna, at least with Scary World Theory, have their own style. While the vocals are very reminiscent of the sounds of Stereolab, the underlying music is pretty original. It's quite pretty, but I think it ultimately lacks the intricacies that I enjoy so much. To be honest, there are quite a few albums I would get before Lali Puna. I would, however, make sure that you eventually picked it up. It has enough going for it to be worthwhile. But then again, you said that you liked Men With Boxes, which I think is hideously boring. Even the funkstorung track is bad, which is rare. There are one or two good tracks, but all in all, MWB is one of the biggest letdowns this year for me. Also, Christian Kleine's album on Centre City Offices has been out for a little bit. I find it nowhere near as good as the Kickboard Girl E.P. Kleine's solo effort is rather bland, but not without merit. Just not one of the best things this year. I'm trying to get up the energy to write reviews of the stuff I have picked up this year.. but I don't know whether or not it would even be worth it. =) Stuff in heavy rotation: A Silver Mt. Zion - that new album whose name I cant recall at the moment because it's not on the cd and I dont feel like looking it up on the internet Prefuse73 - vocal studies and uprock narratives Abfahrt Hinwil - logatech and programm 2 there is always more stuff i am digging, but those are neccessary purchases this year, for sure. take care. shane
