v/a "IMMEDIATE ACTION" 2CD (Hefty) Hefty Records is a strange little label out of Chicago. Strange in the sense that there is no real common thread between the majority of its artist roster... the exception being that every one of the artists (at least as found here on this compilation) are top-notch. This is a refreshing almost revelation really: instead of compiling 20 artists in the same genre, all sounding alike with some standouts and some clunkers, this 2CD set presents a variety of artists treating their musically in a particularly individual way, strengthening each other by highlighting each other's strengths. This set compiles the 6 Hefty Immediate Action 12" releases that hit shelves over the course of the last year or so. Copies were extremely limited (as few as 525 copies in some instances), and for those poor souls like myself that lack any turntable, this compilation is perfect. A pleasant bonus is the inclusion of several exclusive tracks, including a few remixes of Mr. Hefty (John Hughes aka Slicker) as well as a few other surprises. Personal favorites across the disc come from Scott Herren's Savath+Savalas project, possibly stronger contributions than his already-excellent short album released in 2000. These capture the quasi-jazz, post-rock-electronic crossover thing that seems to define Hefty's agenda the most (...if that makes any sense). One of the biggest surprises in the series, seemingly out of nowhere, was Twine's 12" (IA#003), showcasing the duo's development from its early experimental drum&bass days into a slick, avant-garde electronic outfit. Both "Surn" and "Tone Song" are some of the pair's strongest tracks to date (the former turning Erik Satie into something of an almost creepy beauty), and if they are any indication, expect great things from their Hefty and Bip-Hop albums being released later this year. There are occasional spots across the 2-disc set that lose my attention, namely the Retina tracks (not a huge fan, personally), although the "Futurebody" track from IA004 is quite nice, and the Bogdan Raczynski mix of Hughes is typical but not my tea. Other artists contributing include A Grape Dope (aka John Herndon of Tortoise etc), Process, T.Raumschmiere, Samadha Trio, Sagittarian Burners, Beneath Autumn Sky and, last but not least, Telefon Telaviv (expect their full-length to explode very very soon). Hefty Records is sitting at the center of a musical nexus, where disciplines and genres collide into something quite new and refreshing. This IA series not only collects the limited 12" into one convenient (and quite handsome) package, it also is a great crosssection of where the label has been and where it's going. Here's my little track-by-track commentary on the 'supposed' Drukqs album. I do firmly believe this to be legit. I'll eat my fucking hat if it's not. I've been taking things in from afar for a while now. This is my first genuine contribution to the list. To quote Latyrx,"Sometimes the people who talk the most have the least to say." I'd like to assume the opposite as true also :). And as a footnote, I've never really written a review in my life, so take that for what it's worth. Let's begin... iynweythek ylow -This a nice little twangy-reverb harp-ish style piano solo to start off. It's the first of quite a few piano solos that appear on the album in between every few tracks. I find these very enjoyable, coming in complete contrast to the tracks that neighbor it. Vordhosbn -Aww yeah. Nothing groundbreaking, but a great track nonetheless. Starts off fairly 'epic' and breaks down into some finely programmed drum-kit fodder. I agree with previous mention of Hangable Auto Bulb similarities. kladfvgbung micshk -This track gives me a feeling of dark mystery. Compressed piano strikes along with the same sort of style strings as the first track (only without the reverb), plus a 'plucked' bassline are used. Not very eventful, it's the sort of track you could stick in a dark movie with the killer sneaking up on the victim. omgyjya switch7 -Starts off sounding like an electronic whip being cracked over some low bass hits. Then AFX like melodies breakout along with some more great programmed madness. It finishes off in some badass hardcore distorted beats interlaced with static. There's a fun little melodic breakdown in the middle of this one. A very diverse cut. strotha tynhe -A beautiful piano solo to calm the aggression of the previous track. You can hear Richie working the pedals, which adds a nice personal touch. Hug your mother. gwely mernans -Five minutes of low bass pulses, sprinkled with some echoing tones lurking in the shadows. Ambient SAW material. Bbydhyonchord -Qwjelk fbjdso3id!! Loungey tech-house Mr. James styleeee. Bongo percussion + hand claps + lazy melodies. This track is a very pleasant surprise. Some sneaky trickster could pass it off as a Boards song. Don't take the tech-house thing too seriously; I just thought I could sneak it in a deep house set. cock-ver10 -"Come on you cunt let's have some Aphex acid!" Tasteful scatterbrain drums, acid stabs, electro-breakbeats, with a flowing melody thrown in for good measure. I'm really fond of all the melodies on this album. They just seem to pull everything together in certain places. Cock. avril 14th -The kind of piano solo you'd hear in a kindergarten play with little kids tip-toeing around in flower and bee costumes while the fat kid wears the sun outfit and hangs from the rafters. I love the natural sound of the piano working. Just plain beautiful. mt saint michel mix+st michaels mount -Breakneck d'n'b beats with acid squelches, bleeps, bloops, ticks, tocks, and dreamy breakdowns with a gorgeous melody. I wish I had a synonym for melody :) . The last two minutes of this eight minute track contains a girl doing some laa-laaaah-laaaaaaahhhhs over ambient textures, with the beat resuming and progressing into some acid laced cut-switch trickery. Very diverse. gwarek2 -An ambient journey from the belly of hell outward. A woman shouts in pain as a stick is rung across metal bars. Dark ambient tones dabbed with creaks and rumbles. Loop this one on Halloween for all the kiddies coming to the door. orban eq trx4 -A downtempo ditty with a bassline that is scratching the surface of funky. I'd venture to say it's kind of dubby. A maraca with like 5 beans in it, or whatever they put in those things, is shook to the beat. I wish the track was longer than a minute and a half; it's an interesting sound for him to head into. This along with Bbydhyonchord brings some new elements to the album. Aussois -I don't know what this is all about; some women speaking in tongues for all of thirteen seconds. I hope I have the whole track. Others have verified the length. hy a scullyas lyf a dhagrow -Another beautiful solo. Distorted harp-ish strings are played along with a piano. This reminds me of those little music boxes with the prongs and the rotating cylinder speckled with bumps. Actually this is a good way to describe the sound of track one. I could curl up and fall asleep to this. kesson daslef -A more intricate piano solo here. A track time of 1:21 is just a shame. I want more piano!! This concludes Disc 1 which sadly is all I have time to write about tonight. I'm heading to Philly in less than seven hours and I'd like to stay awake at the wheel. Disc 2 will follow sometime on Tuesday when I return. As for the issues of this album leaking and the use of mp3s, I have only this to say: This has been going on and will continue to go on. There will always be people on either side, with valid points to be made by each. Each to his own. There is no doubt that mp3s have vastly extended my musical horizons, while also encouraging me to buy music that I wouldn't have otherwise purchased. I believe mp3s only damage artists and groups that put sales above substance. I'm talking about the one-hit wonders and here today, gone tomorrow type productions. Of course there are always exceptions to the rule, but for the most part this is how I see it. I hope this was the least bit interesting to any of you. Take it easy all, Bocho PS: If anyone can recommend any albums with some nice piano play on it I would appreciate it. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Thanks for the entertaining breakdown. I downloaded the first disc of Drukqs yesterday and skimmed through it really quick, and my impression was: The production is great, the album just has the feel of an album done by an artist at the top of his game. I know that's kind of an abstract "review", but I can't really describe it any other way. It just has a real sense of energy and life to it that only comes from inspired art. When I heard he was coming out with a new album, my hope was: If he doesn't come out of retirement with something completely different and groundbreaking, I hope he at least comes out of retirement to show the thousands Aphex Jr. bands that he's still the best at working within the style that he created. That's all I have for now. ===== check out my station on Live365 - over 8 hours worth of early 90's chill-out, IDM, dub and more at: http://www.live365.com/stations/278479 check out my homepage at: http://www.skack.com __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? I really enjoyed Hans-Joachim Roedelius' record 'Gift of the Moment' the other night (piano, cello, violin, other instruments played by R.) on E.G. 1984. And my vote goes to Harold Budd as well. -M Colin Buttimer wrote:

I haven't heard the Aphex piano bits in question, but I kind of imagine them to sound like Conlon Nancarrow. Purely speculative, mind you. If I'm feeling in the piano mood (which is an entirely hypothetical state of mind), I (would) generally reach for the awesome Gieseking collection of Debussy works, Charlemagne Palestine's acoustic piano works and Ligeti's 60s/70s music for keyboard (great stuff that re-incorporates minimalism into another stream of post-serialism). Oh yeah, and the underrated Swiss pianist Irene Schweizer (I'd also add Cecil Tayor, but I'm not generally fond of his solo piano pieces). Honorable mention goes to Lubomyr Melnyck for his single-minded approach to the instrument (hours of continuous arpeggiated eye-glazing runs). Re: pre-release record hyping- I guess if you have nothing interesting to say about a record that most list members will hear anyway, you might as well be the first. -rob --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
