While is from Maryland I think. As mentioned before he's got a CD/2 X 12" available from Chocolate Ind. called "Lock." I know its still available in both formats from WarpMart, but seems to be drying up elsewhere. Its quite good and one of the best this year so far I think. The CD has three tracks not on the double EP. The double EP has an exclusive cut (a remix of "Lock") as well. The label says the tracks were recorded '96-'98 which makes them roughly contemporary to the Seek EP on MaS . I just got Seek recently and don't currently have a turntable at my disposal and can't definitely offer a comparison. Anyone have any guesses as to which track on Mask 400 belongs to While? My best guess would be A1. "Lock" and "Seek" are very similar releases. From what I understand they are basically contemporary with each other in terms of when they were made. (On "Lock" it says 96-98) They certainly sound very similar. Somebody already mentioned, but.. supplies of "Lock" are currently drying up for some reason. (this only came OUT a few months ago..) I'm hoping they keep this in print, but I suppose you can never count on that. Funny, I see copies of "seek" more than I do "while" now. I would say snap them up while you still can. He (she?) has that sort of slow funk groove going, melecholy melodies, but a fairly dark, or at least somber, feeling overall. Simplistic percussion, pretty low BPM. While certainly doesn't have that "sparkling" IDM feel that so much music does nowadays, which actually makes for a very refreshing listen. Somebody mentioned him being from Maryland. I don't know about that, but I do know he doesn't have any other material out under pseudonyms. With no new material produced in almost 3 years, one has to wonder... but I'm satisfied to think that he's just another example of a recluse electronic musician. later Andrew -- -| Andrew Schrock | aschrock@cs.brandeis.edu |- --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

While biography gleaned from Musik Aus Strom pages: While While is a one-man musical project hailing from the baltimore/washington area of the usa. while has been recording since '92, starting with experimental "industrial" stuff in the vein of throbbing gristle or spk, and after getting into warp's "artificial intelligence" series in '94, moved to a more "idm" sort of sound. after finally getting around to sending out a few tapes in 1997, skam requested a track "nickel" for the mask 3 comp, and planned a 12" to follow...whether or not these will ever be released remains to be seen. other planned releases include the "seek" ep for musik aus strom, a 12" for diskono out of scotland, and a track on the diskono comp. "i'm so bored with the usa"... -While, about a year ago apparantly, now the Diskono 12" is off, who knows about the skam one, but eventually there should be a 2x12" titled 'lock' on Chocolate Ind. sometime in the future.. <<Is all their stuff this moody and jagged?>> The first full track on Even (I guess technically it's the second track--Bin?) really blows me away. While's tendency to use spooky minor keys and vibraphonish timbres over steadily plodding rhythms always conjures up an image of a trans-Saharan caravan for me, especially that track. I swear, I'm suddenly on a camel in the middle of the desert. The Lock EP has a few songs like that, I think B2, C2, D1 ("Trap" and "Shelf" maybe?), but for some reason Even strikes me as a little more mature, at least in that regard. The spooky melodies on Even tend to noodle around a bit more than the more straightforward spooky melodies on Lock, which is a good thing. I don't like the straight-up IDM drumtracks as much and he seems to have more of those on earlier records (like Haze). Although I admit I'm still breaking in Even (at least the second record) after several months and I haven't gotten the new Slip LP yet-- For some reason I don't remember any reviews of that... But for $10 for the CD you can't go wrong. <<also an interview with him at my site, http://www.students.uiuc.edu/~rstanton>> I would like to read it, but the menu on that site doesn't work (for me). Maybe I'm just computer lame, or if it's too cool for Netscape (and, ipso facto, too cool for me) that would also explain it. I would also like to browse the archives for reviews of Slip and stuff, because I know there's a While thread here every month, but the older archives are zipped somehow and my computer doesn't want to unzip them. What ever happened to plain text files that everyone can access and enjoy? It's not like they're taking up *that* much memory. Stupid archives. np: Pet Shop Boys - Behavior _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Well, it appears he's doing the site with javascript links, which one would hope that Netscape could handle - although I'm just checking with Opera, and they don't work there, either. Regardless, I'm not sure I see why he needs Javascript just to load pages in different frames. Normal targeted links would do the job just as nicely, wouldn't they?

Hmm... they're just gzipped (zipping for Unix (and Linux and stuff)). I think MS' IE does it automatic, and I know WinZip does GZipping. Maybe you're on a Mac? I'm not sure why whatever common internet zipping utils the Mac has wouldn't do gzipping, though - it's not *that* uncommon. They would need to be compressed, though - those IDM archives take up a *LOT* of space! -Adam _________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? While is one Chris Moore, residing in the East Coast / DC area. There's an interview I conducted with him at http://www.electronicmusicreviews.com Supposedly was supposed to have a new album out, but for whatever reason he was dropped by Chocolate Industries and (to my knowledge) hasn't found a new label yet. It's a shame, too, since I enjoyed his work tremendously.
