After reading a ton of posts over the past little while, I still don't really know if some of you have the same tastes in IDM as I do. I know that current artists being discussed are: Cex (I've heard snippets of... may have some potential for listening enjoyment) Kid606 (smaller snippets... turned it off quickly when trying him out at work... Uh-oh --- NOT something to listen to at work!) John Leafcutter (first track off concourse sounded dry and noisy) Marumari (enjoyed some of The Wolves Hollow.. haven't heard the new album yet) B12 (good "classic" IDM...) Aphex Twin's upcoming album (wow those drukqs website sounds almost scared me) Autechre's Confield (I find it hard to listen to ... gave it a couple chances) etc. etc. etc. I love the melodic side of IDM as well as some drum and bass and of course a broader range than I want to go into right now. Currently, I've been interested in Gimmik, L'usine, Crunch, EOG, Quench, Yunx, Mr. Projectile, Novel23, and still enjoy Plaid, Mouse on Mars, Arovane, older Autechre & AFX, just to name a few. But I've got a lot of new music I have yet to listen to. What I'm getting at is, I'd like to know what some of your favorite tracks/songs are ... ones that you can listen to over and over and they never get boring, or tracks that you recently discovered that really stand out, or floaty tracks that make your body hairs stand on end and you have to close your eyes and lose yourself in it. I don't know if this has been done before here... but here are some of mine (in no particular order, and not really the best of the best because I might forget some others that I adore. And mostly 'floaty' tunes, although I enjoy aggressive stuff too): 1) pub - summer (rmx by Arovane) --- A current "ahhhh". What a sweet, melodic tune. Discovered it only a few weeks ago. Gives me goose bumps. 2) Avid Acrid Jamshred - Aphex Twin --- Literally brings tears to my eyes. (oh, and goose bumps again) 3) Steve Roach - Begin Where I End --- (ambient). Gorgeous chord progressions on primarily strings. Sleep music. 4) Dang Spot - Plaid ---- I never tire of this one. It's just so FUN and quirky! 5) Dude - "Wave" from Toytronic's Neurokinetic compilation --- Melodic IDM. Light, high synths layered over fairly simple percussion. 6) L'usine - "Mod" from A Pseudo Steady State ---- A semi-slow build to a very enjoyable groove. Good car tune. 7) Download - Cunning -- Great car tune. Brown beats with sporadic swirly pinks. Anyway, enough for now, I'm getting carried away. Sorry this is so long. --Sharon --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Well, given the large amount of people subscribed to the list, I'm sure some people overlap with you. Given time, almost every artist you have mentioned comes up on the list at some point.

Well, generally I don't listen to this stuff on a track-by-track basis; I tend to listen to a whole album at once and judge them as a whole. However, there are individual tracks that I absolutely love, and here are a few (if you're interested in my real tastes, you'd probably want to know what albums I love, but...): Michael Fakesch "Sega" - I heard this track on the Cataract Beats comp on Pitchcadet, and had to buy the album. The album wasn't as good as this track, though it is enjoyable. "Sega" is one of the most beautiful IDM/electronic tracks I've ever heard. Bogdan Raczynski "Dance Your Joy" - this isn't actually from an album; it's one of his early mod tracks. More techno and less d'n'b than the rephlex stuff that made him "famous." It's just an excellent dance tune. My girlfriend likes it :p Gimmik "thing on a spring" - excellent joy-bringing track from Gimmik's first release. Find and hear it! Squarepusher, track 2 on Big Loada, something about going to Reedham - whatever, it's gorgeous like Fakesch's "Sega" Four Tet's remix (on WARP10+3) of Aphex's Cliffs (first track on SAWII) - One of the few remixes around that's actually better than the original, and without doing much at all to the source material. Perfect, brilliant interpretation! Proem "Boring Alice" - being on a compilation, this will probably get overlooked by most, but it's an excellent ambient peice. One of the few on that comp that actually live up to the press-release stuff about it being SAWII-quality and SAWII-era ambient. Freeform "Palavalamp" - semi-rare Worm Interface release, beautiful if a bit long Freeform track. Almost as good as the track that got me hooked on Freeform, "Poundland" :) I didn't really think I could do so many individual tracks, but I guess I did. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Okie dokie, I'll keep my list short 'cause I could go on forever and I really should be working right now. :) Boards of Canada - Happy Cycling - Makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside, great outro track to a great album. Squarepusher - Tundra - My first exposure to Tom Jenkinson, and, though Journey to Reedham/My Red Hot Car/Beep Street/etc... are way way way up on my list, this is still my favorite squarepusher track Autechre - Eggshell/Autiche - I put these in the same line 'cause they're both off the same album and I usually listen to one when I listen to the other. Once again, lots of warm fuzzies. Funkstorung - Last track on "Additional Productions" that I can't remember the name of right now - Same as the Happy Cycling, great outro and it's even on a remix album which makes it all the more impressive. Lego Feet - First song off the EP - Mmm crunchy happiness that tempts me to pay $400 for the EP off eBay. ;) Lexaunculpt - Live Webcast, part 2 - IDM remix of the metroid theme. Yum. Aphex Twin - Boy/Girl Song - Beep. Kyle

Here are some of my faves. I'm at work right now and my memory for titles is not very good, so I'll sometimes just name the number on the cd that the track occupies ;) µ-ziq - Hasty Boom Alert (Lunatic Harness) Always gets my juices flowing! Aphex Twin - Heliosphan & Ageispolis (SAW1) Still, after all these years...the rest of the album ranks about 0,1% behind this one in my favorites list though, the album still being my all-time favorite release in any genre and all ;) Stereotype - Mooshki (Stereotype EP) This is a release by Tom Jenkinson (aka Squarepusher). This partciular track is an epic tune, spanning 15 minutes of pure pleasure! It starts off with a typical Squarepusher SH-101 line and builds up to a massive breakbeat tune...incredible! Jochem Paap - Track 1 from VRS MBNT PCS 1 Sorry, don't know the title ;) This tune gives me goosebumps every time! The way it's built up is amazing and when the little melody kicks in, which pops up now and then, I just melt in it's beauty. (how dramatic ;) Funckarma - Chemical Chain Reaction (Part 1) I just love it, can't get enough of it ;) Autechre - Bike (Incunabula) Just leaves me speachless...the melody in this track is beyond beautifull in my opinion. Plaid - Kortisin (Not for Threes) When I picked this up in the store and listened to this tune, I didn't hesitate one moment and bought the album without listening to the rest...even if the rest of the album would turn out to be crap, I'd still find it worth it's money for this tune alone! (luckily the rest is also very worthwhile ;) Brian Eno - Track 1 from 'Apollo' Beautifull ambient. James Bernard - Track 1 from 'Atmospherics' Incredible strings...very relaxing. Gescom - KeyNell 4 (Keynell) This tune is actually pretty minimalistic. But I get hooked from the first beat and just keep on going to the end...the first time I listened to this tune I was just speechless and had goosebumps to the bone! I'm probably forgetting a couple of hundred tunes that rock my world, because I don't have my cd's and records here right now and I can't think straight ;) Besides that, I could go on for hours naming tunes that move me if I put my mind to it, so I have to stop sometimes... for some reason everytime I play this song it reminds of the the scene in the Muppets movie when they're all cycling through the the park. indeed a great track. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Thought I'd share a few for the moment. This is without access to most of my stuff, and only using related albums/artists through Allmusic, starting with: Push-Botton Objects-Non Existant(Gescom Remix) - on Rapid Transit Compilation Funkstorung-Grammy Winners Video (the song is good by itself, but the Designers Republic outdo themselves with this video) Boards Of Canada-Sixtyniner - off Twoism Plaid-Scoobs In Columbia(Remix 1) Mouse On Mars-Pinwheel Herman Coldcut-More Beats And Peices (the song that got my interested in real music, not just radio bull) Amon Tobin-Night Life (that small break right before the song really gets going is almost perfection) Herbaliser-The Blend Simple Minds-Theme For Great Cities(Fila Brazillia Remix) (not the copy on Brazillification, which was redited, but the one on the Simple Minds single) and, since we're on to the tenth, I might as well throw in a totally unrelated song for the last pick: Dr Octagon-Bear Witness (the obligitory DJ Shadow entry) Not too heavy on the IDM tip. But since you were asking about tunes with melody... It's actually the first modern "electronic" piece I heard since getting into the genre (only just over a year ago!!). I'm actually a classical pianist with a passion for keyboards and computers. I have known of electronic pioneers such as John Cage, Walter/Wendy Carlos, etc., and have done some experimental electronic music study & composition myself, but was not aware of so much awesome music going on outside my limited world. The Internet opened up so much for me. I was forced to listen to a lot of radio pop most of my life because in a small town I wasn't exposed to much else. I ALWAYS craved for more. Don't mean to blabber on.... but when Dang Spot was first played for me ------DAMN! There it was -- there was my music! I've barely turned on the radio since..... Needless to say.... I'm very sad to think of all I've missed for 10 or more years. And I've still got a LOT of catching up to do.

There was a very successful thread some time back about tracks that make you weep. Very nice things were unearthed. (Although, of course, the detractors bickered and moaned about the un-this-listy-ness of the project... like, sorry we have emotions). Nobody's mentioned Luke Slater's "Purely" off Freek Funk yet, have they? Heard it a million times, and can happily listen a million more. Some music gives and keeps on giving. I'd put Brahms' Requiem into that bracket as well. Some more: Plaid "Dead Sea" - this gets me every time. As much as I love 'dang spot', I think 'dead sea' is an incredible sleeper on Rest Proof Faultline "Awake" - first track on Closer Colder. Is that cello? I don't know, but strings with chopped up goodness = me happy. I was almost disappointed that Susumu Yokota only took about 30 seconds of this peace for his Leaf Compilation... Aphex's remix of Philip Glass' orchestration of David Bowie's "Heroes" - my god, what have they done! Lexaunculpt "Aniburl" (i think that's how it's spelled) - I quickly became bored with most of lexaunculpt's other released stuff, but this track is a keeper. BoC "Aquarius" - definitely! Jimmy Page & Robert Plant "Since I've Been Loving You" - not IDM, but excellent version of this Zep tune on the "No Quarter" album... --- Sharon Clarke <sharon@infotechcanada.com> wrote:

Wow - this blew my mind... I have, of course dug Bowies "Heroes" track (as a yound lad) and I bought and enjoyed Philip Glasses' interpretation, but an Aphex remix as well? To me, this is what this list and the internet in general is all about... Oh, oh oh !!! SO glad to see John Martyn's name pop up on IDM :-) I remember spinning ambientish music for the opening of a photographic exhibition some years back and slipping in Solid Air somewhere along the line, and out of the crowd somebody came over to speak to me about how glad they were to hear it. I just saw Squarepusher in Sydney last weekend, and I loved it. He put on a bit of a rock god show, but he wasn't quite just playing a dat... His set was very much of the last album, with very little of the earlier jazzy stuff being played, but he did play a track or two from hard normal daddy. dhave_config http://www.mp3.com.au/dhave_config

I gotta say, I really really really want to hear more from these two. They're supposedly putting out an album this fall, on CCO i think (I could be gravely mistaken, but I'm too lazy to zap over to branwashed), but they are amazing. Every track they pull out of the studio sounds brilliant. Certainly one of the albums I'm drooling just waiting for it to get pressed. Hey, and when is Arovane's Bent Soil album on Neo Ouija coming out? Ever? Wasn't it supposed to be on the streets last January? Damn you Arovane! Why do you have to have talent???? Why couldn't you be mediocre so I didn't have to anticipate your every musical move?!!?! -mark --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I * np : Luke Slater - Love (pulled out the album, and it's still amazing) --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
