When do you think most of them started smoking, anyway, kid? It's either high school or college, where it's usually a social act, or possibly in the army, where it's the only way you're allowed to take a ten-minute break. Later on it's usually either addiction or sustained identification. And since when were intelligence and pragmatism co-extensive? Incidentally, I DON'T smoke, and never have, but I on ther other hand don't think myself superior for it. It's codes of identity and difference, not something with a defined function, i.e. the same reason you party late and wreck your sleep instead of having a nice afternoon or evening soiree-- why? because it's meaningful that you're out and jubilant when all of middle America's asleep, and that you may be sacrificing *your* sleep to do so. Subsuming the symbolic value of acts to their use value is a bit of a disease.

Really? Human actions often have social or symbolic reasons? Really? Thank you, professor. Let's get beyond the 1960s and realize that, regardless of how much time we waste with cultural studies and arguments about nature vs. nurture, humans are still idiotic.

It is always good to attempt to examine all sides of things in order to make adequate choices. I didn't subsume anything. I made a joke. Outside of the occasional review, I write almost nothing to this list in line with my true thoughts, because, outside of the occasional review, I have no respect for this list.

Ha. I don't want to tour space, I want to colonize it. We'll need to sooner than we think, thanks to smokers and SUV buyers. Or at least thanks to the attitudes and lack of willpower that leads people to those activities. It's nice to know there will always be people ready to take me seriously when I'm being very much the reverse. Otherwise, a large source of my daily entertainment would be lost. -Capt. The shame of mass anonymous lists like IDM is that, unlike a club or live venue, you can't just walk away from the two losers in the corner having their own pointless, irrelevant conversation and ignore them completely. But on the other hand, since I have been forced to observe this shit, I don't feel at all guilty anymore about throwing in my two cents, unwanted as they may be. Matt- thanks for standing up for people's rights to make their own decisions for themselves. I like how so many others couldn't make the connection between the right to chain camels at a club and the perceived right to suck down a bowl in their college dormitory. I find pot much more noxious and irritating than I have ever found cigarette smoke. Adam- since you have no use for this list other than to read it so as to make yourself feel superior to all of us SUV-buying, cigarette-smoking, middle-of-the-road idiots, please leave. I'd point out the fallacies in each of your arguments but I've had enough encounters with your type to know that would be a waste of time. That said, go fuck your elitist self. And feel free to prove my point, which is that you are a blabbering nihilist-wannabe liberal ass, anytime you like, just as long as you do it out your bedroom window to the homeless people and not on list to the music listeners. I must say that you *have* to be in the minority in this opinion. In fact, I don't know if I'd ever heard anyone who's said burning tobacco smells better than burning cannabis until today. Not to mention the fact that pot smoke dissipates more quickly and people smoke less quantity of pot than they do with tobacco. My god... one bowl gets you stirred up? I'm just pleased the subject has stayed, especially since no one has been talking about Mars. no, no, no... He said that a fellow student smoking *a* (as in one) bowl down the hall incites, infuriates, pisses off, or as I said, "stirs up." Probably not the best expression to have chosen :) I was implying that pot smoke coming from under one person's door, on down the hall, and into his room shouldn't be enough to piss him off. *shrug* Not really worth all this, though... -Ryan Quoting "ethereon ...(([-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-]))..." <ethereon@undergroundsource.com>: "My god... one bowl gets you stirred up? Well I think it's funny that both the IDM List and the Ambient List are engaged in off-topic discussions without resorting to cursing and personal attacks on ones character. Mark this day in your calendar folks ! Music Related: I'm really enjoying the new Proem Album: Negativ. Too bad the tracklisting is not on the back of the CD case but rather inside under the CD tray in a barely readable shade of the same color as the background (but I digress...)
