Well, i have to say right off the bat that i was thoroughly satisfied with this evenings show at the Detroit Contemporary put on by the lovely Diana Potts. Mike Dykehouse (Planet-Mu), Bill Van Loo (Chromedecay), Stars as Eyes (T6), Telfon Tel Aviv (Nothing/Hefty) and CEX (T6): I came in right in the middle of Dykhouse's set as he began to play what seemed to be stretched Boards of Canada'ish electronics, while he scanned through his cd player for the next tune. It was quite funny as Mike had a portable cd-player in use at all times, and he even sang and made some music with his voice. Quite interesting, i'll need to definitely seek his material on Planet-Mu, i guess it comes out sometime soon.. Up next was Bill Van Loo's set. I think this was one of his best live performances yet, and you could definitely tell BVL was having a blast with his downtempo minimal techno textures as a bright white smile filled up the room. It was a goose-bump moment indeed, what a great set. Stars As Eyes were next, 2 fellas of which i know one is named Steve. They've recently released an excellent full length on the Tigerbeat6 record label called "Freedom Rock", check the info at http://www.tigerbeat6.com/ctlg_meow026.html. I am currently listening to it, and even with all the subtle tweaks and random textures wrapped around the surface, there's a lot of room on the inside of this album that your ears pick up on many of the subtle melodic thrusts. They played a more refined, chilled out set. Telfon Tel Aviv came on the stage a little while after as they had to connect three (yes, three) guitars, three (yes, three) laptops, a keyboard sound machine, and many wires for their full on instrumental electronic performance. I sat there (as well as everyone else) in amazement with the clarity and quality of these three (yes, three) folks on stage. Crisp digital spurts spewed from their laptops while they 2 of them played straight guitar, and the other on the bass-guitar. Telfon Tel Aviv are definitely going to be a highlight for this year once there release comes out on Hefty. My eyes and ears will be on "seek out" until it comes out. Then came Mr. Cex himself on stage, no shirt, and sweat pouring down his chest. All i really have to say about Ryan's set is that it was probably the most exciting, the most hilarious, and the most entertaining show i've never seen before. He rapped in about 80% of the background tracks, he slammed on the idm scene, he had the crowd sing along with him outside, he had us singing Pearl Jam's "Jeremy's", he had us waving our hands in the air, it was quite the spectacle. I was very impressed with his theories, his thoughts, and the fact that when it comes down to it, he's really a good human being. No bullshit, just straight sing along and talk sessions all the way through. It was an entertaining last couple of hours, and Cex really did Cell the show this evening, i have to admit. I am just *really* hoping that Diana has a chance to scan the several thousand pictures that were taken this evening, as i'm very curious to see how they turned out. That's about it for now, so don't forget --see Cex, listen to BVL, seek Stars as Eyes, keep your ears peeled for Telefon Tela Aviv, and have fun with Dykehouse. WOW! Thank you so much for the compliment, and it was our pleasure. I say 'our' because I wasn't just behind this-but the fabulous and lovely Nate De Yonker was as well. Thank you Pietro! The Cex show was one of the most worthwhile trips to Detroit I've made in a long time! Cex added a personality to live electronic music that is almost unheard of. He was funny as hell, and it never got old. I really enjoyed all of his "inside" jokes about Reaktor and other programs. I didn't even realize how fun it was to make fun of music software! I think the highlight of his performance was when he took the entire audience outside to sing Pearl Jam's "Jeremy". I don't mind the fact than many IDM artists prefer to be faceless, but if that is the path they choose, I don't really see the incentive for a live performance. To compensate for the fact that I couldn't get near Autechre at the DEMF (way to big a crowd for a shorty like myself), I went home, put my cat in front of my laptop, and played Tri Repetae in the dark. It was surprisingly similar to the descriptions of Autechre shows I've read on this list. My cat would have been no substitute for Cex, though. I was surprised how many people snuck out during the Cex set, but I suppose it was sort of late for a Thursday night. I'm a bit sleepy at the office now, but I don't regret it a bit. If Cex comes to your town, by all means check it out. All the other musicians last night were excellent as well. I hope more glitch karaoke comes to Michigan soon! Yeah Cex did a show here in cleveland a few months ago and really made a scene. he puts a lot of playful energy into his sets. Cex is actually coming back to do a show in Cleveland in june or july. but my question is... i've heard endless praise for Bill Vanloo's work but i have yet to hear any of his material. does he have some releases out? if so what are they and where can i get them? -->-Lance---- PO Box 450715 Westlake, OH 44145 United States --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
