Sorry for additional post on Autechre which doesn't really add to things but I have to say that 'uviol' is one of the best tracks I've heard in a while. I bought that Confield at the same time as a Metamatics 'Dope for the Robot' and Goldfrapp's 'Felt Mountain' and haven't really given either of the two a listen because I've been listening to this track on repeat. I haven't even really listened to the other tracks on the album. I missed the LA show but I think a lot of the people who didn't like Autechre live were probably those doped out ravers who try to dance to everything without really listening to it. Once I was at a rave and the speakers blew out and there were still ravers lined up against the (silent) speakers bopping their heads. But that is just my opinion. -David [whatup Gilly,Zimbo,Technoir, et. al.] _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I disagree. That type, if any real individuals actually live up to the stereotype you have presented, would generally not be posting reviews to the IDM list.

Heh. At the Portland AE show there was this d00d who danced in between sets. He also danced to Daniel Mensch...a sort of dark ambient artist. Quite funny and entertaining if you ask me.

oh my, do they ever. had you attended the washington DC autechre show, you would have witnessed these foul, mindless twats, flautning glow sticks and doing that ridiculous hand-flailing-i-have-no-rythym-and-i-look-outrageously-stupid dance. nevermind that it was autechre and there wasn't a recognizable, tangible beat for more than one minute at a time. you would have witnessed these atrocities and more, my friend. these horrible souls do exist, and oh, they are not a pretty sight. - wells oliver || wells@submute.net "I wouldn't know because I don't read, but I'll tell you one thing for sure: I wouldn't trust no words written down on no piece of paper especially from no Dickinson out in the town of Machine. Yeah, what were those idiots thinking? Trying to appreciate "intelligent" music and all, when they should have been out somewhere listening to trance. One positive aspect of ravers trying to expand their minds by going to such Intelligent shows (intelligent: where the music is randomly generated - sounds pretty smart to me!), is that Intelligent people you like have somebody to compare yourself to. I mean without stupid ass people like that, how would you even know? __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Get personalized email addresses from Yahoo! Heh...But did they go home and post to the IDM-list? Anyway, this sounds a lot like my attempts at dancing, minus the glowsticks. I was born into a lack of rhythm, so I'll have to embrace it.

That's funny. At the Portland show, the beat-work was fairly regular. Oh my god... no wonder IDM shows always tend to consist of a bunch of people afraid to move... its scrutiny like this that makes people self-conscious. I say, fuck it. If you want to flail around with your glow sticks or whatever else you got, as long as you are losing yourself in the music, that's all that matters. I cant believe how high school popularity contest this is. "Oh my god, Becky, laike can you believe that he is doing that to this music! And laike look at his outfit! Those baggy pants are so nineteen ninetees! He is so not cool like us." I say, if you chill out a bit and dont worry so much about other people, you might actually have a better time. I am pretty sure I am going to be dancing my ass off to Phoenicia in LA tonight and I might just wear some baggy pants and glitter just to annoy some people ;) I hate pretentiousness... so I apologize for the rant.

I don't think it's the scrutiny, it's just that many people are still convinced that standing with your arms crossed in an Aphex shirt is the way to show how clever you are and thus get m.a.d.d. chicx0rz. High school is a pretty natural comparison. Oh well, it's not like being criticized for having fun by a smelly guy with a beard and MASK 200 in his backpack is that emotionally damaging. Hearing crazy metal getting spun at Autechre and then looking at a crowd of guys who think they're at a Yanni show was sort of sad.

That's a pretty good impression of most IDM shows at the El Rey. Eventually people usually catch on and get over their 'irony will make me hip! this time for sure!' phase.

I'd much prefer people flailing around like no-one cared than talk to old friends throughout shows. You'd think some of these events were high school reunions. It was somewhat disheartening to go to the last 3 good shows here in mpls, only to see basically the same people show up, be surprised to see each other, talk throughout the show, then leave early. Probably off to chat it up at *cough*Perkins*cough* cheers, /derek On 7 Jun 2001, Yulia Matusov wrote:

The same as what's wrong with ignoring people who suggest that there's something wrong with it. ObIDM: Otto von Schirach's "8000 B.C."...Dim-witted offspring of Carsten Nicolai and Richard Devine. Speaking of white-coated lab goons of academia, can anyone point me towards some of the more exciting music makers in the electronic-academic area today.
