no, this is not off topic. The new N'SYNC single, "pop", sounds like fucking kid606 produced it. Ok, co-produced it. It's got stutters and a beat-boxing breakdown that includes some timestretched parts... it was hideous (aka bad song occasionally using some cool sounds). argh. anyone but n'sync. and yeah, it's cheesy to be upset by this, but really, n'sync? i could deal with christina agulira or backstreet boys jumping on idm cliches (though it's probably just their producers doing it) but... ugh. just thought folks would like the heads up... and the obvious flame war that's about to happen. :) __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Actually, it was BT (the American progressive house producer) who produced it and it was supposed to be an attempt at making Two-Step Garage. He had a lot of the sounds right for 2-step, but he didn't get the feel of it. It just wasn't shuffly enough to be a good 2-step song. I really think that a lot of you should go check out some 2-step- there's a lot of terrible stuff out there, but there is plenty of really innovative music being made in the genre as well. -- :: atomly :: atomly@atomly.com | atomly@my2way.com http://www.atomly.com/ | 877.741.3571 --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Strangely, one of the best 'nu skool breakz' tracks I heard in the recent past was also by BT... "Fibonacci Sequence". Sure, not really an experimental take on the subsubsubgenre, but it did really kick. And I remember being really disappointed when I found out he was famous for material that I found, um, less exciting. :)

Hell, there's been some really amazing, kicking, strange takes on trance too, that are probably being ignored by the more discriminating, since trance has become such a dirty word. (Tony Senghore's "This is it" being one of them, altho his stuff blends more into funkier house, too) ======================================================================= Brian MacDonald <brianm@kuci.org> ======================================================================= --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

See, that's the thing: those beats could have been good WITHOUT NSync. Yet the producer couldn't make it on his own, for whatever reasons, and decided instead to sell out to the popculture machine. I just saw the video an hour or two ago. Lots of VST trickery nonsense going on; whatever. It's still a horrid pop song, and all the IDMishness in the world is not going to make me like a wretched, contrived boy band -- I don't care if Richard Damn James his self does a remix, it's crap culture for crap people. A good song is a good song whether it's done on a synth or a psaltery - and this is not a good song. As Henry Fool said: There's no accounting for taste. And as my friend Kathy said: there is no 'talent' knob. m@2zo --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I'm excited about it. I hope Christine Aguilera and Britney Spears follow. I'm sure Madonna will. Bjork already did. U2 might jump on it a few years from now. Big stars dip into the underground for inspiration, the underground evolves because of it. My personal feeling is that the glitchy beat and overused VST effects thing became cliche years ago, and I can't wait to see it ushered out the door to make way for something truly innovative. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? The tune was produced (in large part) by the US trance master BT (Brian Transeau). He's got some top production skills. Just listen to the decimated glitchy percussion work and vocoder action in that "Pop" tune - nice. What you think of him working with N'Sync doesnt much matter - if you listen to his "Movement in Still Life" LP you'll hear some really great production - for breakbeat, trance, and more. I personally dont care for his trance stuff, but the breaks stuff is really quite top. This totally doesn't surprise me. BT was featured at a rave I went to in Houston last year. He mostly did sort of bland trance, but he had the most incredibly cheesy moves onstage-- for a DJ anyway. Every 45 seconds or so he'd be messing with a keyboard, then suddenly he'd pick up one side of the keyboard with one hand and bang the shit out of it sideways with the other while this blinding spotlight came on him and the rest of the stage went dark. He would use this like a dance move, leaning way back and getting his hips into it and all. It was SO corny, and he used it about every 16 measures or 32 at most, but all the rollers and trippers just started screaming every single fucking time. I guess he knows his audience... just like NSYNC and their, uh... dancing, right? Zzb ===== __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
