only got to see the last 40 minutes of Plaid, but it sounded great, I'm not 100% familiar with their stuff, but what they plaid (ha ha) sounded amazing. Squarepusher came on played a noise track for about 4-5 minutes, sound just bouncing around the halls, scraping through the octaves then kicked into My Red Hot Car... and from then on in he had me and everyone else. I was loving the tracks cut up, twisted down fucked with every which way to sunday, and on stage all I could see was his manic headbop and imaginary air conducting and he gave it fucking loads! and by popular demand he came back for an encore... wicked! I totally agree with your sentiments. I have always thought of Plaid as Warp-lite. Man, they just blew me away last night. Funky as hell! Can't wait until the new album comes out. I was up on the second level so I got to see some of what Squarepusher was doing behind those crates of gear. The noise track that he was doing was just him testing out his effects board and making adjustments. I have never seen so much energy from an "IDM" performer before. He was dancing, jumping around, nodding his head, screaming at the crowd, and taking big swigs of Absolut. =) Fun, fun show and the encore of Come on My Selector was icing on the cake. One last thing... some people (you know who you are) NEED TO TAKE A FUCKIN' SHOWER! The venue stank last night. --- interdit@yahoo.com wrote:

Exactly. Dancing the robot. Where you move like a robot "in time" or express the feeling you are getting from the music like a robot would. I wasn't doing it all night, only from time to time. Other times I was busily getting my freak on..... __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! I had a good time at the show, though it looks pretty obvious to me that neither Plaid nor Squarepusher was doing very much "live", nor anything very different from what is available in your local record shop. Come on my Selector, in particular, sounded like someone just popped the CD in the player and piped it through the bass-heavy PA. Also disappointing that Tom didn't whip out a bass and start funking out -- hopefully he can get his hands on one that passes muster and lay it down at subsequent shows. The Plaid set was beatier and dancier than I expected. I saw more people shaking it in the balconies because the main floor was just PACKED and nobody had room to do more than nod their heads and stroke their chins, or whatever. This was the loudest and indeed smelliest show I've ever attended at Great American Music Hall. I don't think it was BO, however -- lots of chronic being passed around in the crowd. Bad news for me since I'm terribly allergic to the second-hand smoke.

Were you up on the balcony? From where I was (on the balcony to the side) I could see what both Plaid and Squarepusher were doing. Plaid had this drum pad thing that they were banging on in addition to the stuff they were doing on the laptops and knobby hardware units. Squarepusher had a stack of DATs and a small board with a row of sliders that controlled all kinds of effects, filters, etc. He was tweaking the hell out of things with those effects. That wicked cacophony that opened the show right before he started in with My Red Hot Car was just him adjusting that effects controller. He was using the thing throughout the set to add wierd noisy breaks and transitions and was doing it all in perfect time to the beat. BTW, while there was a lot of pot smoke, there was the very distinct odor of BO. I recognized it as soon as I stepped into the room. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? well, with hippies, you usually get the unwashed aromas mingling with the pot. which reminds me - next time i go to an orb show, i've got to stand 20 feet away from everyone so i don't absorb their stink. my girlfriend wouldn't touch me when i came home! :P micah stupak /"\ laerm@soulfood.org ascii ribbon campaign \ / international bright young kook against HTML email X / \ --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
