i'd recommend decks from pioneer. depending on what sort of
djing you're going to do (ie, are you going to end up playing
at a lot of events where the gear will already be there, etc),
i'd recommend their low-end decks, the cdj-100s.
they run about $380-400 each, are small and therefore easily
portable, don't offer looping or sampling, but have good tempo
adjustment (with or without pitch adjustment), and even have a
jog wheel that vinyl djs say is reasonably useful (i've never
spun vinyl, so i have no idea personally about that feature).
they offer a few effects as well which can be fun.
they are also front-loading, so you don't get the annoying
*SPROINGGG* from the door popping open when you change cds
(the higher-end pioneers are top-loading). this is a personal
peeve of mine, however.
they seem to be the default cd decks for the underground party
scene here in the sf bay area, and i've seen them in at least
2 clubs as well. i often think i'd like to get something that
will do sampling and looping, but then i realize that i'd get
used to it, and then really miss it when i had to deal without
it at some event where i didn't provide the gear.
oh, and bonus--i've seen many sets of these go to burning man
and return without any problems. most other decks will let in
way too much dust via the top loading door, whereas the cdj-100s
only have a little slit the width of a cd and no door.
i got mine by trawling shopping.yahoo.com. they're available from
a variety of places. don't pay more than $400--there are several
places charging almost $500 for them right now.
hope this is useful info,
