Hi all, I read the list policies and saw that any discussion that might promote piracy is disallowed. I wrote a piece of software that would allow us to have not just a discussion forum, but a file-sharing one too, and I wanted to advertise it here. I don't because of the rules, but my dilemma is this -- IDM is a pretty esoteric genre that I would never have been introduced to unless I've been downloading mp3s. It's not the sort of music you're very likely to get introduced to watching MTV or listening to the radio. Ever since I discovered IDM a year ago (first CD I bought was Aphex Twin's Richard D. James) I kept my fascination with it alive by finding associations to new artists on allmusic, downloading their stuff on Napster and buying whatever of it I liked. I bought over 50 CDs in the passing year, more than I have in my entire life before that. How do you feel about the issue? Did downloading mp3s make you buy more IDM or was it just the cheap way out for you? Cheers, Nir

I too would have never discovered IDM without mp3s. I started out listening to club music and found a bit of IDM posted on the alt.binaries.mp3.dance newsgroup. Because of this exposure, I purchase as much IDM on CD as I can afford. IMHO anyone serious about recorded music would never be happy with just a collection of mp3s. Maybe people who are happy with listening to pop music on FM radio may find the sound quality of mp3 ok, but I am sure IDMers much prefer CD or vinyl. I continue to download as many good quality IDM mp3 as I can find and I buy as many IDM CDs as I can. I for one would be very interested in trading files in an IDM specific group. For me, this will lead to more exposure to the artists and their work and more purchases of the stuff I like. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Nir Arbel" <nirarbel@yifan.net> To: <idm@hyperreal.org> Sent: Saturday, April 07, 2001 10:47 PM Subject: [idm] IDM forum Hi all, I read the list policies and saw that any discussion that might promote piracy is disallowed. anyone into kettel? im listening to "cenney crush" right now and it reminds me alot of Black Dog circa "Bytes" and (to a lesser degree) "Spanners". great stuff. the ep "look at this! Ha ha ha!" is great too, but not so much like Black Dog. and ive heard samples of the new Kettel album "Volleyed Iron" which sounds like it is a very good ambient release. what other albums might i like by him? do all his albums vary so much one from another, like the above three do? -thad Thad Biggerstaff instrumental@comcast.net "Not to forget, I 'museumize' myself; so that then I pay myself a visit and find me again in all the relics, to hand down memories from one to the other, like a genealogical tree, as if it were morning!" - Massimo Toniutti

Thad, You'll find there's a lot more consistency & almost too much like-sounding stuff on his other releases. He recorded a lot of stuff in a small time frame and i think it shows when you compare releases like Atomic Tadley, Red Pear, Dreim, etc. I happen to like his Smiling Little Cow release the best. You could see some comparisions to '94-'95 black dog there for sure. However it's interesting to see him trying new things. I read an interview with Kettel recently and he certainly seems to have a lot of music & ideas left in him to release. Portis anyone into kettel? im listening to "cenney crush" right now and it reminds me alot of Black Dog circa "Bytes" and (to a lesser degree) "Spanners". great stuff. the ep "look at this! Hi guys, a couple of friends and I are currently setting up an idm forum, basically a modernised version of this mailing list.. it's still under development but it's open for use right now at: http://idmboard.com - if you feel like checking it out it would be great to get some participation going :) in the near future we'll be adding a shoutcast system to the board and a few other little goodies :) we're hosted on a dedicated server in texas so no danger of the site being slow or unstable (unless we mess something up!) lexa idmboard.com admin --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
