Jeff - I met a couple of cool kids at Coachella who *drove* from Kansas City. If I remember correctly, that means clear from the banks of the Mississippi (or even the other side, depending on what part of town they were from). They came over in order to catch the Warp/Skam tent and a couple of other acts. Man, I felt bad when they heard about the work permit crap.... I hope they did end up driving the extra couple hours to see the Pacific in order to make up for it. About a month or two ago I ran into a whole bunch of New Zealanders at a party at the same venue, Empire Polo Fields. It was a good party, but nothing like Coachella. And that's a big 'ol body of actual ocean, not just the lake-with-small-waves Gulf of Mexico (my folks are from Panama City, FL, so I can talk shit about it, driving from the Nah'leans airport over to the Panhandle twice a year along the silly thing.) Speaking of Coachella, though - has anyone heard anything recently about this year's version? I had seen on their website months ago that it should be Nov. 4th and 5th, but I haven't seen any promotion for it at all, and I only live about an hour and a half away. Anyone know what's up? While there's a fuck of a lot less to do in the Pomona/San Bernardino area than there is in L.A., you also have the option of flying into Ontario airport... that is Ontario, CA... which is just east of Claremont, Upland, Pomona, etc. That will save you around an hour or so driving compared to flying in to LAX. Ontario airport is a more expansive airport, i think.. and cheaper too. Just a possible money saving tip. ======================================================================= Brian MacDonald <brianm@kuci.org> ======================================================================= On Wed, 28 Mar 2001, Jesse McCoppin wrote:

"Anyone who went last year. When did it start and when did it end? This year it starts at Noon." in oct '99 it started right around noon and each night ended by midnight, from what i recall. budget about 2 hours from the time you park your car until you're able to get into the door and about the same for leaving the site - unless they've made significant changes to the door flow logistics & traffic mgmt, respectively. my only complaint about the first coachella. outside of that, it was spectacular all the way through. ae playing live was a wonderful surprise (esp given that jega & bola didn't show) as they were only supposed to dj. enjoy!

Um.... that WAS a DJ set for Autechre. Two laptops and a midi mixing board. I believe that their live set contains more equipment and more freeform experimentation. I suppose it is all a matter of semantics as Ae seriously push the line between live and DJ performance. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! I was more "live" than a lot of idm acts i've seen.

"Um.... that WAS a DJ set for Autechre. Two laptops and a midi mixing board." well, it wasn't an asr10, r8 & a board, that's for sure (their rig at the la show 3 years prior?). but it wasn't two sl1200's and a mixer either. i consider a laptop, board & effects to be 'live' - esp if 100% of the material played is the artists own. in talking with mike p after his set he even commented that ae were going to be playing 'live' rather than the 'dj' set they had been booked for. in the end, it's mostly perception.

I saw Sigur Ros at Coachella and again last night at the Fillmore in SF. First of all, they have a drummer, bass player, keyboardist/ guitarist/ flute & pipe player, a 4 piece string section, and a guitarist/ singer who plays his guitar mostly with a violin bow. The singer's voice is absolutely angelic. He has one of the most beautiful and distinctive voices I've ever heard. His voice combined with the incredible tones he can get out of his bowed guitar are one of the most unique and gorgeous things I have ever heard. I don't really know how to describe the sound; you just have to hear it for yourself. The songs tend to be slow and melancholy at first and then build in intensity until they climax. Ahem... They are not unlike Mogwai in the way that they build to grand peaks of sonic intensity. The result is something incredible. I have bought Sigur Ros's album and it doesn't come close to the beauty and intensity of their live sets. If you get the chance, drop everything and go see them. --- zimbo <tofu@falco.kuci.uci.edu> wrote:
