The highlights of the albums by the Herbalizer for me have been the tracks featuring female MC What What. Does anyone know any more about her or if she has any releases of her own? i've been wondering about that as well and i second your opinion on the herbaliser albums. the only appearance i've seen by what what except for those on the herb records is one on the (completely brilliant) ep "hiphop for respect", out on rawkus. there's a LOT of different people involved in that project (the 12" was released after the amandou diallo shooting in ny), mos def, talib kweli, invincible, kool g. rap, rah digga, sporty thievz, shabaam sahdeeq, common, pharoahe monch, posdnous... among others. really good and highly recommended. other than that, i've seen nothing. cheers, /franz --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Maybe I'm just talking out of my ass again, but wasn't she in those Sprite ads with Kool Keith as one of the seven deadly women/venoms/whatever? and she's got a pseudonym which i can't fucking remember that was reviewed a while ago in Vice. could i be any more vague? i think not.

I could be totally wrong - but I do believe that she's a Cape Town grrrl (just like myself) from here in South Africa, the daughter of Abdullah Ibrahim, famous composer / pianist (in a more jazzy vein). He himself became famous under the name "Dollar Brand" way back in the 60's, his hugest hit being "Manenberg" (which you might well find on compilations featuring SA music). When he converted to the Muslim faith, he took on the name Abdullah Ibrahim. Asked and answered, and I hope I'm right. What What is in fact the daughter of Abdullah Ibrahim. She re-named herself Jean Gray recently. Last places I heard her were on the last High & Mighty record (great track with Kool Keith and Bobbito) and on M-Boogies "Laid In Full" record. Great M.C, somewhat elusive. That would be Jean Grey with an E, for those of you frantically typing it into Napster et al, as I just discovered after a bit of hunting :) -- Rev Simon Rumble Current physical location: London, UK simon@rumble.net http://www.rumble.net If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world. -- J.R.R. She also seems to be spelled 'Jean Grae' on napster. Anyone know the 'correct' spelling? Adam
