Yo hey Rob & I saw The Residents in Philly at the Troc this past Wednesday...Here's a little review for those interested in such. Anyways...The Residents were, um, The Residents...I dunno, it was the first time I'd seen them...I have a few of thier more obscure things like 'a big 10-4 place' (or something like that) and this ther odd thing made of ambient sounds and snatches of music that I like to use during a chill out set.....I'd heard about them for years, so thought this was the perfect opportunity for some unusual fun...and unusual it was, and kinda fun and funny...the female singer is excellent, mr skull was in fine voice, and the 4 eyeball guys came out only once for a short intermission/leg stretch from thier posts - these gauze framed stalls, 2 on either side of the area where the performers did thier thing...they had some new instruments, and I was lovin some of the tribally deep bassy beat patterns. The lights were real purty too. They drew a really good size crowd! Oh yeah, they were really pushing thier new DVD, that was this tour, "Icky Flix" is all about...all these videos, and the songs have been reworked. I'm excited, I'm going to see them tonight. I saw them do their "Mole Show" concert and on the "King and Eye" tour and both shows were amazing. Not your average night out. The DVD is excellent by the way. Was nice to replace my well worn VHS copy of these videos. "Third Reich & Roll" is a timeless bit of footage. Any idea what their drummer was using? From the balcony it almost looked like a xylophone, so I'm wondering if there's some sort of xylophone-based MIDI controller out there.

If you're a fan of the Residents, you should definitely check this out. The DVD has 2 language channels, the first has the original mixes of the songs, the other has their new interpretation. It's cool how some songs that're 20 years old change completely, while some even older ones change very little.

Ahh...The Residents. Lat time I saw them was in Ann Arbor, MI - must have been near 20 years ago. I remember that one of their giant eyeballs had been recently stolen and one of them was dressed in black as a sign of mourning. Great show. Personally I have never been able to choose between Duck Stab and The Commercial Album. The latter is prolly more solid, but who could leave off hits like "Semolina" from their classic list? "Diskomo" would make for a great reissue also. j

"Duck Stab" is a great record, although I would say "Eskimo" weighs in as my top Residents record followed closely by "Not Available", "Fingerprince", and "Third Reich & Roll". I spent a lot of time in the 80's under the influence of errmm....things, listening to the Residents. I traumatized one of my friends by making him listen to Eskimo followed by the first Kid Of Widney High record while he was messed on acid. He's never forgiven me. There is a video on the new Residents DVD for "Gingerbread Man" which I'd never seen before and it just did my head in. Me and my girlfriend just looked at each other when it ended and were like "wow, that's one of the most depressing things I've ever seen".
