Hi Kurt,
Finally a nice subject for the IDM list. Ummm the rap stuff on Xen Cuts is
real good, however I've found it almost impossible to track down any of the
artists on Big Dada (Ninja Tunes hip hop label). Some of my faves for Ninja
Tune (that you'll probably be able to find pretty easily) are:
Ninja Cuts Vol 3 - Funkungfusion
Clifford Gilberto - I Was Young... (Very jazzy, and about the only drum 'n
bass-ish album I've ever been able to stand)
Kid Koala - Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (Didn't like it on first listen, but it
has grown on me. Now I think it's too short, but quality takes time)
The Herbaliser - Blow Your Headphones (Beyond great)
Funki Porcini - Ultimately Empty Million Pounds
I really like the Infesticons single Hero Theme. How is all of Gun Hill
Road?
I'm looking forward to the Wagon Christ release, and if it's anything like
his other stuff I'm sure it'll be another great Ninja release. Will it
actually be on Ninja Tune, or is it going to be on Big Dada with all the
other Luke Vibert stuff NT has released (aside from singles on compilations
of course)?
If you're looking for rap that's up to the caliber of the Ninja Tune stuff,
I'd recommend:
J5 - Quality Control
Common - Like Water For Chocolate
Deltron 3030 - Deltron 3030
Talib Kweli & DJ Hi-Tek (Reflection Eternal) - Train Of Thought
But that's probably for another list. Which reminds me, does anyone know of
any good hip hop mailing lists, where people might talk about stuff in the
vein of the above 4 albums? I would search for one myself, but I'm sure I'd
end up subscribed to a list continually touting the genius of Mystikal or
some other such nonsense.
Cheers
