This is a tricky one!
As we all know, there's a VAST amount of new music - far too much
to keep abreast of for ordinary beings with a budget and limited
time [well, there are only 24 hours in a day].
Also, there's a large amount of mail coming through with positive
and negative comments flying about releases. Too much to take in,
especially if you don't know the release yourself.
What I tend to do is read with keen interest and care those reviews
relating to artists whose work I already know and like; with interest
reviews relating to artists I have heard lots of positive things about
but have no personal experience of, and with less interest reviews
about people I've never heard of.
Thus sometimes when later (up to a few years later) I happen to
come across a release locally - either new or used - I might well
remember having read _something_ about it on the list, but cannot
recall what... whether it was positive or not, whether the description
led me to believe it might be something up my alley or totally
opposite to my taste. At this point I might well write a query to the
list asking for refreshed opinions. Also, through the binoculars of
time, people may have changed their views on a given release.
Further, living in a country where most music is not easily available,
I have to do much buying via mail order and at the point I'm ready
to put together a list of things to order, I might also ask for
reminders on what's worth having, even though it might not be this
month's latest release.
