everyone... I was at fry's electronics over the weekend and saw a cheesy dual cd-player with mixer intended for aspiring DJs with the graphic design taste of a 12 year old...but it got me thinking. I'd like to learn how to mix and with my collection, CDs are definitely preferable to vinyl...any hardware recommendations on this tip? any magazines out there with especially good reviews or advertisements where I can get my eyes on some of these things?? DJ mag, of course...what else? ---brian ------------------------ Brian W. the Pioneer CDJ700's are the best, but apparently they're about to pop out a new line with finer-grain pitch adjustment. no details yet. they tend to break down if you abuse 'em. the CDJ100's are a lot more durable, so most CD DJ's who "spin" outdoors tend to use those. pretty much everything else apparently sucks. this is all secondhand information. david ----- Original Message ----- From: "Gause, Brian" <bgause@SECTORBASE.COM> To: <idm@hyperreal.org> Sent: Tuesday, January 23, 2001 7:58 PM Subject: [idm] cd mixers

*sucks* is a little harsh. (Thank you for waying "apparently".) I have access to Numark's which are considerably cheaper than the Pioneers and work perfectly fine, though with less bells and whistles than the Pioneers. I've also worked with the Pioneers - both the older top loading models, and the newer front-loading ones, that pop your CD back out at you like a toaster, without a tray - I'm personally not that keen on over-handling CD's (generally in the dark and in dodgy circumstances... as most of you who've played clubs and parties would agree). The Numark's are very portable with a separate "face" that links onto the players via long cables, so you can place the small compace 'face' control unit at a convenient level. There are also Denon and Gemini's on the market (as well as quite probably a few others that I haven't seen), but I cannot vouch for any of those, since I haven't played on them (except one fateful night with Gemini's that had one player stuck firmly on minus 6!) Shop around, if possible not only on-line, but physically pick them up, open and close them, check their mechanism and durability etc. before making a decision. apologies if you consider this off-topic. hopefully you will at least consider it informative. i've got a denon DN-2000F MKIII dual cd unit, and it definitely does not suck. i chose it because i originally planned to mount the remote control below my mixer in a full-length turntable coffin. later i discovered that coffins suck ass for more reasons than one, so i cut some hardwood boards and mounted both parts of the unit in a custom-made console. see http://www.booyaka.com/~phase/console/ for pictures. one of these days i'm going to stain the boards and drill some slots to use as handles, for better portability. i like my denon unit because the range of the pitch slider can be switched from +-4% (for tight beatmatched sets) to +-8% (for matching pitch in ambient sets). anybody who needs more than +-8% for a beatmatched set should have done a better job selecting records for that set. my only beefs with my denon unit are that the trays are kind of flimsy (i've never had a problem, but then again, i'm extra careful -- i always open and close the trays with the buttons, and i've got the machine set to close the trays quickly, to reduce the chances of bumping into one while it stands open), and sometimes it skips when i try to play cheap, non-branded CD-Rs. that could be because my CD burner is over 3 years old, though. luckily, i don't have any problems with good quality (e.g. mitsui) CD-R media. the 2000F is now obsolete. it's been replaced by the ugly, white 1800F (which appears to have the same features), and the attractive 2100F, with added seamless looping and a slightly revised layout. you should still be able to find the 2000F, and for much less than a pair of CDJ-700s. for more information on the current denon pro DJ lineup, visit: http://del.denon.com/catalog/products.asp?l=3&c=31 phase np: lisa carbon trio - polyester --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
