I had no idea I'd get such a great response for such a simple question. It was great to hear a little bit more about the people we talk with every day. Sorry to all those who aren't on the digest version for recieving all those mails. I've attempted to tally up all the results, and here's what I've found. A good chunk of people on this list are tangled up in the field of design and programming (as I suspected). Here's how it breaks down. out of approximately 54 responses: Graphic/Web Designer/Architect: 12 Sound Designer/Audio Engineer: 5 Game/Software Designer/Programmer/Developer/Engineer: 11 --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I've attempted to tally up all the results, and here's what I've found. A good chunk of people on this list are tangled up in the field of design and programming (as I suspected). 3 ways to get those jobs .... 1. be dead good at what you do and they come get you 2. have a top mate who says "yeah i know some one who does music" - this is dying out but was the most common way about 8 years ago 3. send out demo cds by the bucket load and make sure its eye catching musician in the hard one - and most musicians in the games industry are drop outs from the music industry sound design - most are failed musicians from the games industry (thats why in most games all the sfx are familiar) about 20% are trained or come from tv/film/radio background - cv good, demo disk and showreel (tracklay sfx to an avi) even better or create a custom bank of sfx for a game already released - its usually quiet easy to hack your sounds into someone elses game those 2 are hard to get, but there is one job that there is a glut of AUDIO PROGRAMMER (WANTED!!!) this is the bloke that takes the content (sfx, music and speech) and makes it playback on PS2/GameCube/Xbox. i have a full spec of the job if anyone is interested ... the company i work for www.csl.com (www.criterionstudios.com) have TWO Audio Programmer Jobs that need filling in our Guildford/UK site If you are interested or know someone who may be - mail me and i'll give you all the info work email = benjib@csl.com home email = benjib@benjib.com even if you dont live/want to move to Guildford i know of Audio Programmer jobs all over the UK Liverpool, Manchester, Wales, North London have fun ben^jib www.tapir.madvision.co.uk -----Original Message----- From: jonah dempcy [mailto:jdempcy@home.com] Sent: Wednesday, January 24, 2001 4:16 AM To: idm@hyperreal.org Subject: Re: [idm] idm & careers: the tally is in!

if you have a demo for video game companies, let me know. i have a few friends that work in the industry. but remember that this is video game music, not comissioned audio art. it needs to be a bit digestible by masses. they also could probably use gameboy audio. a. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
